Capturing Taking Way Too Long

Hey guys,
I'm in the middle of a project and I have a couple of miniDV tapes with about 50 clips on each to capture to FCP. These tapes were put together by recording onto a miniDV tape from a beta deck. The problem is, every time there is a break in the timecode, it does this 60 second standstill and then starts capturing again. I'm doing "Capture Now" and this is just simply taking way too long. Is there any way to get FCP to not look at the timecodes while I capture? I never had this problem on Premiere.

Thanks,

~Bryan

Make a clone of your minidv by connecting 2 cameras via firewire. The clone will have unbroken timecode.

I don't have 2 cameras to connect. This is just one of the reasons why Mac will always make up only a small portion of computer population. I could've done this on PC in one click. With Mac, I have to use 2 cameras. Would iMovie do it right and be a quicktime movie file or does it suck too?

How many Mini-DV tapes do you have? 2-3-4? If they fill the whole 60 minute capacity it is only a few hours. I would switch it to NON-CONTROLLABLE DEVICE (you will lose TC) and press play on the Mini-DV cam and click CAPTURE NOW on the Mac and walk away for 60 min. Rinse and repeat till finished. The chop up the clips in edit as needed. It is the most efficient way, IMO, in terms of labor. You have probably spent a couple hours just trying to figure out a work around anyway. Just my .02

Yes, - I think you're onto something. Apple's downfall will be dictated by your tapes having timecode breaks. Take that, Steve Jobs!

Agreed. Not the best place to be ragging on macs, especially when its your fault for not learning, and nothing to do with the software or computer.

Like digital recommended, go to your capture settings and set it to "non-controllable device">press play>press capture now> come back in 60 minutes.

go back to PCs then. I get so tired of people who go from PC to Mac and all they do is complain that it doesn't work like their PC does. If you like PC then stay with it. If you like Premiere then use it and quit complaining about FCP.
