Rode NTG2 and F.F. Coppola

I want to say that this microphone has to be wonderfull because it was used by Coppola in his last feature. I believe in a rewarding experience of Coppola or Walter Murch.
I think some forums criticizes this microphone because it is cheap.
I prefer an experienced opinion.

wel I'm not a pro, I have just bought the rode ntg-2 mic and for what I do (a bit of everithing) works great. I know that other pricier mics will do better but I needed one and this was all I could afford.

probably you want to find out the "brand" of the person hanging on the other side of the boom pole too, and find out how much he/she will cost. That's a better investment than any microphone

yeah rafael has a great point. I've got an NTG-1 and yeah its a great mic for the price but its definitely not the best mic either. However a good boom op, and a slew of talent on the audio post side can make alot of things sound fantastic.

do me a favor - the Romanian recordists get paid 500 euro a week incl his equipment , so the best they can do is buying gear that suit their celery .
not sure if the entire movie was recorded with or it just used as the camera mic .

piece of **** but why not if you adr later :-)
5 million in Romania - that's 30 in Hollywood :-)

All right , but ...why didn't they use a Senheiser? a budget $5 million can to have all the best (a expensive microphone ,an experienced operator +sound designer....). Why did they use a ntg2? Did they choose this mic because is cheap????

probably, because Coppola charged $4,500.000, for directing, plus the $500 a week for the rumanian sound recorder. Oop now they are running out of cash.

Well first a little perspective. Walter edited the picture and was the rerecording mixer, he wasn't the production mixer. Mihai Bogos is the who made the mic choice not Francis or Walter.

Second other than Oleg, who likes to be dramatic sometimes, I haven't heard anybody have a strong negative reaction. I used one once and was surprised by how good it sounded. Now that is not to say it was great, I didn't use it enough to really compare it to others (1/2 day ad shoot subbing in for a friend). But I expected a noisy thin sounding mic and it was not.

I never worked with that mic. before, but everything I heard about it sounds great. I'm pretty sure the sound mixer has good reasons to pick up that mic, based on the his knowledge of sound technique and the aesthetic approach he was trying to accomplish. That said, I wouldn't use any mic just because it has been used in a big movie. I don't know the reasons for that decision and I don't know what texture they were looking for.
Antoine Bonfanti, decided while he was recording The LAst Tango in PAris, to mic Brando form behind and pointing to his neck. if I try to do that my sound is going to be horrible, because I'm not Bonfanti .
Bottom line, the mic it's not the point.

its not thine its hollow/muffed peas of **** .
and sorry noiz , nothing dramatic about , i said that enough times in the past -
and as we say here about- you are the best in your price tag we could get :-)
the Romanian mixer probably used what ever he has as no one in the world incl Coppola cares what are you using .
by the way ,there is nothing that post production couldn't fix

any one who shot in Romania , Bulgaria ,Ukraine doesnt care how does it sounds as it pinatas near constrictions, crew , art ,location and extras cost they save
as they say why bring addition c stand ,if you bring another gaffer ,in the same price or cheaper :-)

Oleg,
"Dramatic" was a general observation. For example anything recorded with a "hollow, muffled, POS" would not also be fixable in post. So your pointing out the deficiencies but in a rather dramatic way.

Sorry Guys...

But Oleg is an F'n Rock Star!!!

It always makes me happy to read his post.

I only wish we had audio of his voice as well.

But in my mind, I hear his Eastern European Accent and it makes his words even the more delectable.

To each his own... so what if the wrapper is a little sour when the candy inside is so sweat and tasty.

And as always, it is dangerous to learn to swim by mail!

I worked on a few shoots with an NTG-2, and herculean boom strength needed to hold those monsters up for 10 hours aside, I still bought a Sennheiser MKH-416 as soon as it was feasible.

everything could be fixed in post if there is a contract for adr
and even the actor died - you still find someone who will sounds the same
and fix it in post

eastern european ascent? -

You didn't know you were Rumanian? Wasn't that your credit we have been talking about???

And Oleg, your starting to sound like a producer "keep moving we can fix it in post". Ironically now that we have the tools we don't have the time to use them. You can make just about any ADR fit the original and look in sync now but a lot of features are down to 5-6 week schedules, every once in awhile you get some 10-13 week posts but... Never Cry Wolf spent three years in post. That was a film people bought houses with. So fixing in post is still elusive unless you have a lot of $$$.
