Vegas 8 / buying a new computer / advise needed.

HI all,

I'm new here. Looks like a nice place. I look forward to getting to know every one and sharing info.

I've been recording audio (Samplitude Pro 7.23) on my PC for about 6 years now and my 4 year old Dell has performed pretty well. I'm in the process of expanding my business to include video. I've recently purchased a Panasonic DVX100B as well as Sony Vegas 8. I'm currently running Vegas 6.

I’m in the process of purchasing a new computer. Where can I find info regarding what components / hardware Vegas is or isn’t combatable with?

Also, here are two of the systems I’m looking at. If any one would like to give an opinion about either system please speak up. I’m open to any advice. I was thinking about going with an iMac but the lack of expandability nixed that idea. Plus, I have tons of Windows software.

Here are the specs for the two systems I’m looking at right now:

Polywell specs:
Poly P3500a DDR2 1333FSB MB,gLAN,2PCIex16,7.1A

Intel Core2 Duo E6850 3.0GHz 4MB CPU 1333FSB

Seagate 160G SATA-II 7200RPM HD 8M Cache(O/S)

Seagate SATA-II 250GB 7200RPM HD 16M (Data)

52-In-One USB 2.0 3.5" Internal Card Reader Blk

On-board 7.1 3D Audio Sound

Fanless Nvidia GeForce 8600GTS 256M PCI-E Grap

On-Board Gigabit/100/1000T Ethernet

Windows XP Professional CD+License

Price: Around $1530.00 with tax and shipping.

Here's a link to the case http://www.polywell.com/us/tower-g/TS514.asp

And then there's this:

Seems like a nice system but the case is a little cheesy, IMO.

Price: Around $1400.00 with shipping, they're out of state so no taxes. Plus, they just sent me a 5% off deal (puts the price somewhere around $1330.00) if I order within the next 72 hours. It looks like they specialize in gaming computers so I'm a little stand off-ish. Would this be a good system for video editing?

Thanks for any advise.

For DV with Vegas, that's plenty. But I'd look at a PCI sound card if you want to do 5.1 surround. Onboard sound just isn't where you want to be.

I have a Presonus FirePod fire wire break out box that I use for sound. But I don't think I can do surround with it. Can you recommend a few cards I should check into?

Thanks again.

what about building your own computer? you'll take out the middle man and get exactly the parts you want.

also, the q6600 renders faster than the e6850.

I have thought about building my own PC. I have no experience with this but I do think I'd be capable of building my own with a bit of help.

Can you recommend some good resource's for getting started, advise, configurations, and general guidance?

Thanks.

what i did is i went to my local computer store, had a general idea of what i wanted (graphic card, motherboard, etc) then got a quote on it. thats all.
I would research what i want in my system using the net and go from there

Regardless of whether you build one or have one built, spend some time here:

to start with, check out everything under the "tech support" tab---lots of great info.

That's a great site, Thanks.

I thought this was interesting. From the tech support section regarding memory problems:

"[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]For best results, choose memory that runs at 1/2 the speed of your front side bus. If you have an 800Mhz front side bus, go with 400 Mhz memory."

Is this true? Polywell set me up with an Intel Core2 Duo E6850 3.0Ghz 4Mb 1333FSB paired with DDR2 1066 memory. Should I order it with 667 memory?

I'm ready to order my new PC and I need to figure this out quick!
