Beware opinion about to be voiced.

I notice a lot lately when I look in here that people are asking about Hardware. I realise that if the question was will this jib allow for this shot or that shot or what lense should a use for this shot or that, you need to discuss the hardware, BUT........... Well you get the picture.

Thank you ncje!!!

I've been disappointed in the large gear topics of late!

I am chalking it up to the fact 'the holidays' have rolled around and it's spending time!!!

blah... i agree. also if I hear, "how do I get the film look", I might go nuts.

anyway, I'm about to shoot a film... I got an hvx, doorway dolly, 6 lights, 2 monitors, a bunch of batteries and barry green's book....now I just need a script. hahaha. just kiddin.

no hate barry, remember, I'm going to name my first newborn after you. haha

In my opinion, the cinematography section should be more about technique vs. technology. I want to see threads about composition, lighting, camera movement and other areas of like interest. Not just "oh this new light just came out...cool" , or "how do I get that film look"?

The last is my favorite, because have you seen film lately? It's got 1 billion different looks.

Recently I was in an in-depth conversation about ISO ratings on cameras and the zone system. Although this is technical, it's not just tech geek talk about a new camera (which I am guilty of sometimes) around the water cooler. Check it out here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=117232
I think that thread has more cinematography in it then most posts here.

There's nothing wrong about talking about new products or specs, it's just the lack of creative talk about USING the technology which makes it uninteresting for me.

I agree with what is said here. I am finding an alarming amount of threads here only pertaining to gear, most of which is simply, "what do you think of this light, it's only $____!"

I find myself wandering elsewhere to engage in technique based cinematography content, though I wish their was more interest here in the craft, the art and the progression of good cinematography.

Sure, but remember. The mindset amongst most amateur filmmakers is that the gear makes the filmmaker. Which explains the endless hair splitting about this camera versus that camera, this light versus that light, etc. That's more important that how to use any of this gear, let alone things like, oh, acting or writing.

(And you thought you had an opinion to be voiced!)

i'm still waiting to meet one of these amateur filmmakers claiming the equipment made them what they are today.
