What Video Card are you currently using?
What's your heaviest smooth HD preview?

I have a 3.15GHz duo and my source HDD is a 7200.10 x 2 (RAID 0) but I can't get two color corrected 720p tracks (both visible though opacity) to preview smoothly on a pixel per pixel window? During that preview my processor is at 75% load with Core # 1 hitting 100% only at times and very briefly, so it would seem that it isn't the CPU that's holding me back, and it can't be the HDD. That's why I am wondering if my EVGA geForce 7600 GT is the bottleneck. Now I know that Vegas doesn't use Video Cards that much and it is basically CPU based, but maybe certain operations such as CC rely a little more on the video card.

So I ask, what Video Card are you using and what happens when you do the same, or how much heavier of a timeline can you preview smoothly?

Does Vegas only work in a 2D environment or are some of the effects 3D renderings?
Ok, the Sony site says that Vegas only uses 2D rendering technology, so videocards really don't play ANY sort of factor ar ALL on render or preview times?

Vegas doesn't care what video card you have. It doesn't use it for anything. Processor and RAM are all it cares about.

The card can make a difference, though, when it comes to other things. If you're using two LCD screens, you should use a card with two DVI outputs, instead of one DVI and one analog.

I have two DVI, that's what I read I should look for so I am covered with that...
so I guess my 7600GT is a little under par for magic bullet... dang! that's what I was worried about, I mean, I don't have it and never used it, but you guys seem to adore it, so I can see myself wanting to get it, maybe. Does it do the same as Celluloid? (not the same but same type o' stuff)

On a side note, I tried overclocking my 7600GT last night since there was nothing else to do with the $ I no longer have, thinking I'll get a notch higher performance out of it... there was a little magic button called "Find Optimal" that brought the CPU from 560 to 582, and the ram from 700 to 752... I was happy! Untill my system crashed... hard. My BIOS got corrupted! So anyway, the 7600GT is not a good overclocking card and now I have to spend all day re-flashing my BIOS and getting back to the numbers I got that stable overclock with... I might try to OC the card, but only IF I get something like Magic Bullet... lol... at one point when I didn't know what the hell happened, and my computer wouln't bood up (AT ALL) I felt like I was gonna puke... lol thankfully the MoBo is kick-ass and everything is healthy...

anyway, 'nough video card talk, it makes me sick now.... lol

I just wanted to mention that the DS3 Mother Board is exellent and after re-flashing the BIOS I got my computer back to the way it was %100 as if it never happened...

to run magic bullet, they recommend a geforce 7800 gt and up.

In regards to "up," is the 7800 swell enough since it's their minimum recommendation and if not, what's the lowest priced one that gets the job done to the point you shouldn't complain? I understand the get-what-you-pay-for mindset, but I don't want to unnecessarily spend too much. So, what's enough to get my by properly?

David > im currently facing that issue. I work with 2 lcds. But my graphics card has one analog and one dvi. The colors look different on one of them. No matter how much i tweak. One looks a tad paler than the other. But another surprising thing. The entire brightness/contrast etc adjustment menus that are generated by the monitor themselves look small and of a different size in comparision to the monitor on the left. Both monitors are benq and the same model too. Exact replicas. How is this possible ? If its because of the different outputs (1 d-sub & 1 dvi) then how can the monitors own menu look smaller ?

The monitors aren't getting the same kind of signal between the two outputs, so their internal software reacts to them differently. A DVI signal doesn't need anywhere near the adjustment as does an analog signal.

David > I didnt quite grasp your last line. Your saying a dvi signal doesnt need much tweaking as an analog output would ?

So if both were dvi outs the monitors would be reasonably close in temp and color right out of the box ?

Yes. The analog signal may require more adjustments, even including picture position, etc.

In theory, two LCDs through two DVI ports should be pretty much identical, yes. That doesnt' mean you won't want to adjust them to taste, but the settings for both should be the same.

I'm about to buy a video card. Any advice on this?

HAHA! I was about to start a thread asking about a potential new video card when i saw this ongoing thread. perfect.

My puter is at the cdotcor getting upgraded and my new motherboard does not support my old card so I have to buy one, and might as well buy the RIGHT one then, right?

So my puter tech was suggesting this one, which is on sale at frys this week:

Viper ATI Radeon HD 2600XT 128 Bit PCI Express 16X 512 MB GDDR3 Dual DVI + HDTV out

Is this enough or should I spend more $$ and get somethig else (if so WHAT). can't get my puter back until I buy a new card so this is now at the top of my URGENT PRIORITIES LIST - You guys mind helping me make the right choice so I can buy it / order it tomorrow?

Thank you, I don't know what I would do without this forum and the awesome people on it!

Nvidia FTW... I agree with David. They are faster too. There might be a few price points where ATI might be a better buy from time to time but most the time in most the price points Nvidia is faster.

You might want to consider waiting for the new GTS 512MB with the new generation GPU (G92) which should be out mid December, just in time for the holidays... it is slightly faster than the 8800 GTX 768MB and might be a touch cheaper than the GTX... a real beast. Then again you'd be fine with a little $60 like the 8400 GS too if all you are doing is within Vegas...

For AVID you need Quadro cards as opposed to the cheaper "gaming" cards in the Geforce line, and I suspect things programs like Magic Bullet would also benefit greatly and provide about real time with them...

I am chiming in cause I am in the middle of trying to find a Geforce that can be flashed over to being a decent Quadro but it seems this might not be possible and that there might be minute hardware differences possibly there only to prevent exactly such a thing...

It's not so much Vegas itself that demands the upgrade as it is Magic Bullet. So what video card is sufficient enough to make Magic Bullet run smoothly? I don't wanna cheap out, but I don't wanna overspend on something faster than I really need, ya know?

I use a 640MB GTS and get about 8-16fps in 1080p though depending on the effect it may bogg down to 5fps at times and some times a few more than 16... but I'd say most the time between 8-16

again I wonder if a Quadro would run MB smoothly...?
