Seems like I am about to invest another $5000 in equipment and need your help.

Just purchased the Letus Extreme to add fixed Nikon lenses. I have been happy with the quality of lense on the HVX 200 but seems like this will add a higher level of quality. Price of Letus $1200 (soon to be regular price $1500).

Nikon Lenses. 28 mm. 50 mm. 100 mm. 200 mm. May upgrade to Zeiss. roughly $1000.

Not sure of best follow focus. Seems like Red Rock is well respected. Price $645. Does this look like all I will need.

Support for Letus Extreme. Seems like Letus is working on it but is Zacuto the way to go.

Any thought on what can be shaved or improved on.

Thanks. Breathing deeply to see if it is worth the investment. Definitely having equipment lust.

You can shave about $1600 if you go with an Ikan Monitor and a different Matte box like the Redrock one or Hysonfilms... you can also save another additional $225 by using the follow focus form Indie Focus. It is as good as the Redrock one.
Also I don;t believe that at this stage you need to pay extra for the Zeiss lenses...Nikkon should do just fine. I am just trying to help you stick with your budget without compromising too much quality! :-)

Thanks for the help. I really want the Monitor for HD focus so I am considering the Nebtek or Marshall. Will check out less expensive MatteBox...seems like a good place to save. Agree with Zeiss comment for now.Any suggestions on cheaper base plate?

thanks

The Marshall isn't any better for focusing than the HVX's built-in focus assist. The Nebtek is supposed to have pixel-for-pixel which would make it much better for accurate focusing.

I have the Zeiss's myself... and when you're ready to make the cross over... it's worth it! I have the Redrock FF and it's amazing! And I'm a HUGE HUGE HUGE Zacuto fan. If you want any help with a Zacuto rig let me know. And I agree with storyp24 about the HD monitor! Nebtek is the way to go!

Thanks Barry for the heads up on the Nebtek...I have missed your comments and glad to hear about the pixel for pixel focus. For me having a sharp focusth is one of the most important reasons to have a monitor.

i think there's a reason Nebtek calls them "focus assist" monitors! I will personally vouch for the quality customer service at Nebtek. They're customer oriented. They're friendly. The all come from the industry. So they know what we all go through and are there to help out. I love Nebtek. It never hurts to give Marshall some competition eh?

For boom poles, I recommend K-Tek. They're affordable and high quality.

The specific Z-LWS you linked to is meant for ENG cameras (over the shoulder cameras). Feel free to contact Steve at Zacuto via phone and he can probably help you better than I.

I think you probably want the "universal baseplate" with the Z-grips and the shoulderpad (with q-release). Give them a call!

I received my K-Tek 2 weeks ago and love it

i'd like to purchase next something like this but i'm not sure if i will need to buy another mount/pistol grip to have this set up. What you guys think/recommend. I already ordered a shock mount (see above)- so will i need to buy another to have this set up?

I have a Zacuto with 12" rods and then rod extensions for use with my doublemount/RED wireless plate as well as with my shoulderpad and Z-Grips setup.

As for the lenses.
I have 2 Nikon (28 and 50mm), a Zeiss (50mm), and Vivitar Series I Macro (105mm). The Nikons just can't compare to the other two lenses. It makes a HUGE difference to me in how sharp, punchy, and delicious the images look. I can't wait to get a full line-up of zeiss. The focus is much smoother too.

Shortnstout,
I have Zeiss 35, 50 (macro), 85, and 100 ZF primes. They are amazing and like you, I love the throw and the smoothness of focus.

cool! i wish I had all those! how do you like the macro for a macro lens? my issue with that (i never tried it though) was that it was only 50mm, meaning you'd have to be pressed up against the subject to get 1:1. Also, with your macro does the focus ring change position in relation to the base when you turn it? That's the problem with my 105mm, the focus ring extends WAY out, making it impossible to use with a FF- not even close!
oh, noticed you're from Athens. 40 Watt and Lo Yo Yo Stuff are amazing!
Cheers,
sns

Ya I love the 40 Watt. Did you go to school at UGA? Lo Yo Yo... what's that exactly?
I haven't been able to use my macro on a project yet, but with focus rings (like those from Redrockmicro) I dont think using a FF would be a problem. However FF is almost necessary for any macro work that isn't fixed focal length. The barrel only moves forward by about half a pinky width.
