NEW 1024x768 HD Monitor

Visualbrother,
Thanks for the image. Yes that looks a bit bulky. I'll see what I can come up with. But I was heading towards something along those lines.

For the power thing, yes, I'm going with that round power plug. I know the XLR would be a more solid solution, but some people don't have a way to power XLR. what I will do is have a plate with XLR input, for those using battery belts and such.

as for shipping to the netherlands, no problem. it will just be more expensive than USA shipping and take a little longer.

Thanks for your input.

Hi all:

Has anyone recieved their Carrion yet? Would like to hear some real world user feedback from people using the monitor in their work.

Best,

Dan

Hey Dan,
No one has received their Carrion yet. I haven't shipped any so far. The only people that have seen it are: Brian form RedRock, Steven from Birns & Sawyer, "Manny" Reduser #41, "Matty_g" dvxuser, "Kholi" dvxuser, "GageFX" dvxuser. and I think that's about it. I feel confident that if you ask any of those people, you'll hear that they all thought it looked pretty amazing. (but you better ask them. I don't want to put words in their mouths.)

Also I stated on the web site that the lead time for shipping was about 2 weeks. This was I believe about 1 1/2 weeks. I already got all the components in, the Boxes are Finished as of Friday but still need the Silk Screening, and i'm shooting a short this whole week. I'm hoping I can ship them by friday or Saturday.

I'll keep you guys informed about the batteries. What I can say is that with an Anton Bauer Hytron 50 it lasted about 3hrs 5mins. and with the IDX Endura 7s, it lasted about 2hrs 40-50mins. ( the IDX is not as exact because My stop watch got stuck a little, so I had to guesstimate.)

Anyway, that's the scoop so far.

Hi Luis:

Thanks for the heads-up, sorry I thought you had just begun shipping. Please let us know if you are going to be showing the Carrion anywhere in the LA area in the next month or so.

Am I correct in thinking that the Carrion is the only monitor of the Panasonic, Nebtek, Carrion triumvirate that uses a 1024 x 768 resolution? The 7.9" Panny shows an 800 x 450 resolution? (according to B&H?) and the Nebtek specs at 800 x 480? If this is true, than that means that the Carrion is the same spec screen as the $4,000.00 8.4" Panny, which is damned impressive.

Also, it means that I bet that the resolution is probably so good that I won't need or miss the focus on red or white capability of the Panny or Nebtek? Correct? I assume that the focusing is very visible just because of it's high resolution?

I would like to buy the Carrion but I would also like to see it in person beforehand if you show it in LA.

Best,

Dan

Can't see how that could be true. I mean, sure it'd be better than just eyeball focusing on an 800x480 panel, but the pixel-for-pixel feature means that the BTLH80 would be every bit as useful on the 1080p monitor output of a Red One, whereas regular eyeball focusing of 1024x768 wouldn't be anywhere near as accurate. Might be fine for eyeballing 720p stuff though.

Does the Nebtek offer pixel-for-pixel? It sort of sounds like it might.

Hi Barry:

I shoot almost exclusively 720 footage as most of my footage ends up on either the web or NTSC DVD at this point. That could change in the future but very few of my shows are delivering in Hi-Def at this point and the ones that I have delivered in Hi-Def, the up convert on the Kona 3 has looked very good.

Have you done any sort of shoot out between the Nebtek and the 7.9" Panny? I like all of these monitors for various reasons but I am leaning toward the Carrion because it uses the 1024 x 768 screen, it is much less expensive than the Nebtek or the Panny and I like the idea of rail mounting the Tekkeon batteries versus hanging large batteries off of the back of the monitor on either of the other two. Luis seems to have created a capable monitor for a very reasonable price with some nice features.

According to their website, it does. That's why I want to try these three monitors out in person. I regularly shoot interviews and tabletop with my 17" Sony and can focus perfectly without any sort of peaking and or pixel for pixel image magnification. But of course, that is a 17" screen, not a 7" or 8" screen so I am wondering how easy it is to focus with just the sharpness/peaking up on the Carrion?

I guess the big issue to ponder for me is can I successfully use the Carrion to focus accurately and easily when shooting run and gun and outdoors with a hood? Until I try it in person, I will not know the answer.

Another plus is that Luis has said that he will be able to add an SDI in to the Carrion A in the future for an additional fee, which is also a great option if I ever get together the funds for a better camera than the HVX in the future. Adding SDI could be a nice option to have.

I have used the Marshall and was not particularly impressed with it, that's why I had hoped that the increased resolution on the Carrion might be helpful.

Haven't seen the Nebtek at all. I'm a big fan of the pixel-to-pixel focus assist and the focus-in-red features, especially when used together. I wouldn't buy a monitor without 'em, but then again I wouldn't buy an upside-down 35mm adapter when many people would. If the Nebtek or the Carrion have those kind of features then I become very interested, if they don't then it's just not a product I care to explore further.

If you're doing mainly SD stuff and need a 720p monitor I bet the Carrion would be just about perfect. I'm looking forward to the Red One and the HPX500 and I am insisting on getting the focus assist features and HD-SDI, and neither the Nebtek nor Carrion offer both, so I'm not in the market for either. The Nebtek looks close; in the specs it doesn't list pixel-for-pixel but in the overview it says it has it, and it has peaking but apparently not in a colored form (focus in red is amazingly awesome; it was the single redeeming feature from the HD100 and it's incredibly useful on the monitor). If Nebtek has colored peaking on a b&w background and pixel-for-pixel zoom, then it moves way up my list.

I only looked in on the thread because you'd said that 1024x768'd be good enough for focusing without focus assist features, and I don't think that's true although it'd probably be fine for 720p-only.

Ok guys,

Just finished shooting my short film. At least until we do some reshoots, and the final scene in January.

But I have some good news. Just tested the monitor with the HVX batteries and its working well, I will report back regarding running times.

Also, the monitor worked excellent during the filming of my short. :)

Dan,

You will need two. The problem with one is that you are up converting 7.2 volts to 12 volts which is what most LCDs will need. so What happens is that you run your batteries down pretty fast, and I believe the image is not as bright as when plugged in.

My friend has a Marshall, and I think he goes through batteries every 1 to 1.5hrs. Maybe its a little longer, but he turns the monitor off between takes.

The 5hr20min test was done with the monitor turned on the whole time, connected to my HVX which was pointed at a tv. So the image was moving the whole time, and the monitor was working the whole time.

HI Siniarch

Im so very impressed with this. We are just about in the market for a small HD LCD, if I can get the budget up a bit, you can count me in.

I am much like yourself, always finding things to do better. Geographically, we are in a rural location, so much of the stuff we use out in the field is Custom built. The nearest camera store is a state away.

A few thoughts.

Is it possible to get the input Mounts on the bottom of the case? (dont kill me for suggesting, Im very aware of production change over costs, especially for a small startup operation) I think with all the input mounts at the top, it may wreak havok on cables after a while...lots of shorted wiring due to the bends and lack of strain reliefs, Not to mention tugging on the monitor with gravity, from the top.

2. A shock mount frame. I built a little aluminum frame for a 6 inch LCD we used, it was maybe 1.5 inch larger in size to the monitors case. I used Rubber bands from my buddies Kid's braces to attach the monitor. (along with some holes to on my monitor thread them through) It worked Identical to a Mic Shock mount in theory. If the monitor fell, got smacked ETC, it did not take the full brundt of the blow. Because the exo-frame was a little deeper than the monitor, I was also able to mount some plexiglass to the front and rear (with vent holes) this way the monitor was protected at all times, but floated within the frame. It came in very handy with a rogue Boom mic operator once. The screen would have been toast without it. I can throw the thing on the back seat and even pile stuff on it without worry of poking the screen. MY plexiglass cover removes with Velcro when it becomes too reflective.

A multi volt power Tap to sponge off of would be cool, but I understand the costs.

I hope you will be hearing from me, my budget and two weeks are all that stand between me and your product. The two weeks are gonna happen no matter if I die or not, the budget is something I gotta work on. Either way, I will be buying an HD field monitor in the next three weeks. Researching my intended purchase is how I found this thread. Your price isnt out of line, my budget is.

100% markup is standard in the Product industry. Most products will not make it to the shelves or see the light of day without that expectation. You were dead on in respect to that.

......I dont see the slot for the built in Blue Ray discs or the SD card slot for photo frame mode..... :-)

Hi MagicCat,

Thank you for you interest, and I hope you can bump up your budget :)

  1. As for the inputs on the bottom: I don't think I can change my design for one or two units, but what I can tell you is that you can mount the monitor upside down. It has a rotate image function, so it works either way and I've provided mounting holes at the bottom and top. (this should solve your concerns.)
  2. As for a shock mount case, I'm already developing it and will offer it soon. Funny enough is very similar to what you are describing minus the Plexiglass cover. (I might use that idea as the lid if you don't mind)
  3. multi volt power Tap to sponge off ? what do you mean by this. can you send me a link to what one looks like?
Thanks,

Luis

Hi,

Sorry I keep posting to shamelessly promote my product. ;) but for those interested, my monitor will be shown at the Redrock Micro Booth during DV Expo in Burbank on 12/5 & 12/6. http://www.dvexpo.com/

Brian V. has been kind enough to purchase one, and will have it at their booth.

I'll also be there on Wednesday, drooling over all the equipment I would like to buy but can't afford. :(

Hope to see you there.

Sincerely,

Luis Sinibaldi

CORRECTION: I DON'T KNOW WHY I THOUGHT IT WAS IN BURBANK, ITS AT THE LA CONVENTION CENTER.

I haven't seen it yet but as some of you may know I am drooling about this...

...don't feel bad about posting Siniarch, this is a great addition to the available products for HVX's and not enough people know about it.

I can't wait to see it this month.
