Anyone know of a laptop for under £500 that can play DVCPRO HD and has win XP for Edius and has card slot for P2 cards in the UK.

All laptops i see in the shops have Vista and Edius only works in XP.....

I only want to do very simple cut only editing on location with edius.

Dell and HP have options for their business-class laptops (not sure about consumer-level) to get an XP "downgrade" as the license agreement for Vista allows running XP in lieu of Vista. You might need to call them though.

Sure, that's easy. Just go to Newegg.com and click on laptops . . . over on the left in "advanced search" just select Windows XP Pro in the O/S box (don't make any other choices--it's easier). You'll get over a hundred to choose from, most of which WILL have the Type I/II PC Card Slot (PCMCIA) you are looking for.

Note: I missed the "£500" part of your post . . . not sure how much that is in USD but there should be a handful that are close.

£500 is over US$ 1000, but NewEgg isn't going to be a good choice for anyone in the UK.

Edius isn't so easy to use on a laptop. It is optimized for dual screens and is also a big Mhz hog.

All NLEs are MHz hogs, but Edius gets more performance out of the CPU than most -- it is well-known for realtime mixed-mode editing.

As far as the dual-screen thing is concerned, it lets you define multiple screen layouts. It is true that the default layout is for dual-screen systems, but you can change that. I did.

Which version of Edius...4.5? And what advantages would you say it has over Premiere, Vegas and AE? Also, does it have any kind of Cineform-like functionality? Thanks.

You've been able to run EDIUS single-screen since... I can remember...

I run single-screen on my machine here. I set the Monitor window to Single view, stretch the timeline across the bottom, nest the Effect palette with the Bin, and nest Marker with Information.

I've been running Edius since the first version that hit with P2 support around NAB '06 . . . think it was 3.61 or something like that.

My experience is that BROADCAST, XPRESS PRO, DVRACK 2.0 HD, ON LOCATION, and pretty much the rest of the ADOBE line run comparitively well on both my (XP Pro) laptops as well. Are they faster on my dual xeon workstation . . . of course.

Do you have Canopus hardware? Also what video card is best for such NLE's on a workstation? Thanks.

. . . faster on my workstation because it has more memory and two 3.2 gig Intel processors. My laptops are a 3.0 Pentium 4, and a Core Duo 2 (snail) 2.0 chip.

I don't have any Canopus hardware--don't think I would see an appreciable benefit to the workstation. Don't use me as an example for video card choice . . . mine's rather low end but it has two DVI ports and drives both monitors (nVidia Quadro FX 1500).

I am trying to setup a good workstation to replace my slow (for HD laptop. What processors would you recommend?

My old EDIUS laptop is single core 1,73 Ghz mobile Intel CPU and it works with 720p no problems.
1080i is stuttering, but I do mostly 720p or DV so it is still fine. I guess any Core 2 Duo CPU will have no problems in Edius.

Edius isn't as picky as some other NLEs are when dealing with video cards (I'm looking at you, Avid).
I run a dual-monitor setup with an X1950pro from ATI. I'm happy with it.
