are all adapters blurry on the sides?

this has probably been brought up a lot before but since I've never actually used an adapter, I'll ask anyway. It seems like from all the footage I've seen - brevis, redrock, letus - that all of the adapters result in an image that's slutty blurry on the sides. Not depth-of-field blurry. But blurry no matter whether the side is supposed to be or not supposed to be blurry.

Soft edges/edge to edge sharpness is a common issue on 35mm adapters. The design of the achromat used plays a big role in the resulting e to e sharpness, along with other variables in the optical path.

The SGpro is now tried and tested and all users have been pleased with its edge to edge sharpness.

e to e sharpness is also camcorder dependant, meaning some cams achieve better e to e sharpness then others, the Canon XH-A1 being a good example of a cam which gives good e to e sharpness in any given setup.

To my eye, the only other adapter in this price range that achieves the same level of e to e sharpness is the new letus extreme.

No.

My Brevis used to exhibit the blurry sides. After taking it apart and sitting down with a proper production monitor I spent some time adjusting the Nikon mount so it is tack sharp across the whole field of view.

There are certain lenses now that will get blurry sides on my Brevis but not so much so that I cannot shoot with them. If I was looking at a resolution chart you would be able to tell but in real world scenarios it is invisible.

This footage was shot with the Brevis flip ... and it's tack sharp from edge to edge even framing 10% larger than the SLR standard film frame. The flip module and related optics take the Brevis performance to a new level :-) Edge softness from SLR lenses used wide open is something we can't fix, but this footage was shot with a variety of lenses, and all were set a few stops closed down. Using CF1 or CF1Le, you can get away with going from f1.4 to f2.8 on a 50mm lens with virtually no increase in light loss to your camera. Strange, but true.

My letus EX exhibits none of that. Even the lenses that are soft on the edges are no longer as bad as they were (Which I never noticed) on the M2. After looking through older M2 footage I saw it.

The Brevis footage I've seen has all very very noticable blurry smeary right sides. I rarely see anything from it with edge to edge sharpness.

M2 exhibits this less, SGpro is just about non-existant and the Letus EX is edge-to-edge no doubt.

I've used Brevis, SGPro, and Letus. All achieve acceptable corner to corner sharpness in my mind, but set-up can affect this enormously, and most Nikon's are not really sharp in the corners at wide open f stops.
At various times I have thought one was sharper than the other but I don't think the differences are major. I am not surprised that dennis has noticed an improvement with flip optics as they do change the ball game a bit. Soon all three will have a flip and I suspect will also all have similar and acceptable sharpness.

It is true that there is generally a difference between the optimum focus point for the corners vs the center and you seek the best compromise. If you're not aware of this you might end up on the wrong side of the center focus and come out softer on the corners .This is pretty subtle though.

Re Kholi's oservation that the Brevis tended to be soft on the right side - I see no evidence of that in my experience whatsoever and it doesn't really make sense to me. It might be true of the footage he saw in particular but its not characteristic .

What I can attest to is that on every single adapter I have owned I have had to reset the back focus of my 35mm lens and that can affect corner to corner sharpness .

I don't want to go and start pulling peoples footage up to show these cases, but I can point it out in nearly ever Brevis clip I've seen. The first time I saw something that I considered edge-to-edge from a Brevis unit was the footage that Dennis linked to above.

That was with the flip unit. DCP also had some surprisingly sharp footage from the Brevis unit, which I commented on a few weeks bacck.

Other than that, that's one thing I have noticed about the Brevis and it's always on the right side.

oh gosh. how slutty I am. talk about a freudian flip. I mean slip. I guess we know where my mind was. I like the answers so far. It appears to me from what I've read, that the two main contributing factors to faulty e-2-e sharpness are cheap lenses and bad setup? If that's not it, please suggest anything else to help eliminate this problem. I was leaning towards a Brevis but after what Kholi said, I'm scared. Although someone mentioned that the new Brevis units solved this problem. True? False? Is Letus the way to go (I know I know - we're basically turning this into a "which 35mm adapter is best" thread. But basically, I just want a clean in-focus (where I want it to be in focus) frame. So which adapter is the best for that?

I'm printing out a test chart right now. I'll shoot it with my Brevis and DVX and put up the results. I won't have the pictures until tomorrow evening as I am away from a computer with editing software on it, but I'll get 'em up.

wayne kinney is right,in my opinion an from what my eyes can see ,the best edge to edge adapter could possibly be the sg pro and the letus extreme which i now own.i purchased a sigma 24mm lens last week and it's amazing how sharp edge to edge this lens is on my letus and canon a1 set ups.not so on my old m2.

Well you should check out the different Brevis samples before you go on what I say. Maybe I'm seeing things, because others are saying they don't see it. In the examples posted from the Brevis on commercials not too long ago I can clearly spot it in the same place on the right side of the image.

Sometimes it's not distracting, but I deifnitely see it.

You should look for yourself and see what you find.

My M2 was setup pretty well and for a long time I thought I had pretty good edge-to-edge. It was only after playing with the same 50mm lens wide open on the LetusEX that I saw what edge to edge can really be for these adapters. The M2 is a good unit, but the SGpro's newest revisions and the Letus EX haven't been seeing the blur that you're talking about.

no kholi, I've seen the same thing, which is why I brought it up. At first I was just focusing on the brevis footage because that's what I was planning on buying. And I saw it in a lot of that footage. Then I started looking at the other adapters just to see if it was an adapter thing. What I found was I saw it on most of the footage. I know there are new versions of these things coming out every 4-6 months or so, so I'm wondering if the new versions address that issue, or if it's just specific brands that tend to have it.

Have there been other threads on this issue btw?
