Types of lenses

Sorry if I post on the wrong forum.

I understand that many times it depends on the situations/set but majority of the time, what type of lenses do most people use? SLR lenses for digital camera can be used on video camera (specifically Sony EX1), correct?

I was just surfing in the B&H site for Nikon lenses and it listed SLR camera lenses and large format lenses. What are the differences?

okay clarification... 35mm (SLR lenses) can be used on a camera only when using a special adapter. Most prominent are the M2 by Redrock, the Brevis by Cinevate, and the Letus series by uh Letus.

there is no way (that I know of) to mount large format lenses onto a video camera.

Do some research on the subject and feel free to post additional questions in this thread.

Thanks for the quick response. I am thinking about buying the Letus35 Extreme that's why I was asking about the lenses.

I'd also look into the Brevis and the M2. They all have their strengths and weaknesses in terms of Brokeh, Flips, and other things. Enjoy the hunt!

TheComo, I don't think it's about money.
It's about quantity. How many large format camera owners are there in comparison to 35mm camera owners? Exactly! The idea behind these adapters is to be able to partly use your own equipment... I can take my Zeiss prime off my adapter and slap it onto my Nikon dSLR. Also large format lenses seem to cost more.

I have a Zeiss ZF prime set.
Others like the Nikons.
Canon lenses don't work so well because their aperture is adjusted by the camera body itself.

If you have the money, go for the Zeiss prime set... best lenses I've ever used.

28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, 105mm 135mm, 180mm, 200mm Nikon primes, fixed focal length, manual focus lenses. Nikon most popular lens as of now, due to their quantitys, found on eBay, or KEH... USED

bwest, quick question...hope this doesn't sound dumb. So let's say I purchased a Nikon lense that is 55mm - 200mm, will this mean I don't have to purchase the 105mm, 135mm, 180mm, and 200mm lenses?

Yes, I have read great reviews on the SGPro but I don't remember if the SGPro is pre-flip or not. In addition, I believed the unit looks a bit like lunch box. As far as asthetic goes, I prefer to the Brevis but I think the pre-flip module is not available yet that is why I decided to go with the Letus35 Extreme.

Are you referring to this? It's certainly nice but of course, it's not cheap at all.

Wayne is coming out with a flip option for the SGpro that will be an add-on to the existing SGpro. So you have an option to go flipped or unflipped. You do lose at least 1 stop of light with the flip.

Dennis is offering a pre-flip kit. That means you buy it without the flip and then when the flip comes out... you're guarunteed to get it.

Remember that flipping the image does lead to light loss as smithy just stated. That's why the Brevis, SGPro, M2 optional flips are nice... especially with the HVX in low light situations.

The Zeiss's are beautiful and beautifully expensive yes! However, if you were to just by one (the 85mm) it wouldn't kill you. I have a set of 4 including a macro lens.

Okay, so let me get this right. If the image is not flipped, that means after I record the video into my camera, in my NLE, I will have to flip the video in there, correct?

When you said, "guarunteed to get it", is that mean without additional charge?

Do you know if the M2 can fit the EX1? Most cameras that I've seen that fit the M2 are only 1/3 inch cameras - can the M2 work on 1/2 inch (or even 2/3 inch) cameras???
