HD DVD may have got me now...

I just caught the commercial for Star Trek Season one on the SD/HD DVD. I went ahead and looked into it a bit more, and it looks like they redid the whole show from original negatives, redid the music, effects... it's beautiful man.

You haven't been watching these on TV? They've been rebroadcasting the remastered versions across the country. In LA they air them in HD and they look beautiful. The effects have been faithful to the original look of the show so they don't really stick out too much. They are just cleaner and more detailed. No more circling the same differently hued planet with the same 2 shots anymore.

Let me guess, it comes on between 11 pm and 1 am? I don't normally watch the local channels, except Fox and the CW.

Soft focus close-ups in HD, I love it!

"Bones, that man is dying!"
"Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a...... oh, right."

I wonder if they would do this for TNG?

Why do they insist on ruining cool things, Lucas style?

They decided to upgrade the effects because once they started mastering them in HD, the old effects were so grainy and dirty as to be unwatchable. I had the same concern until I started watching the new shows. They're replicated the same camera moves for the most part, and have kept the retro feel in the look and cinematography. Nothing seems out of place or pasted on like the Star Wars films.

I'm not a fan of Lucas either, but this isn't another case of Greedo shooting first. It is merely refreshing the old film stock, to make it pertier :)

I think the reason the new effects here don't bother me as much as in the Star Wars films is because the Star Wars films were special effects landmarks. Messing with them was like messing with film history. Also, as noted, George changed some story elements like Greedo shooting first. The Star Trek shows were never known for their landmark special effects work. Even on standard def they looked dodgy, and cleaning them up just makes them more enjoyable. But the real stunner are the new transfers. So rich and vibrant you want to lick the screen.
