How to apply a photoshop filter to a video secuence

Hi,

I'm trying to apply a photoshop filter to a video secuence but I can't. What I do is export the video secuence to a "secuence of images" with QuickTime (I think it does that through Flip4Mac) so I get a lot of individual .png (the format I use).

Then I try to open those .png files with photoshop using the option "filmstrip" but it only opens one file or if I do multiple selection opens indivually each file and not "one filmstrip"...

Hope I'm explaining ok becouse obviously I'm making some mistakes in this procces. Can anyone tell me if it's possible to apply a photoshop filter to a video using fcp and how to make it?

Thanks in advance,
Night

What version of Photoshop are you using. The current "Standard" version (as opposed to "Extended") will not open filmstrips.

I have done what you are trying to do in the standard version by creating an Action that applied the filters and adjustments I wanted to each still image and then automated that to do Batch process that applied the filters to an entire folder of images. The Help file in Photoshop describes in detail how to do these steps. The reason I was doing this was that Photoshop had a filter that was not (at least not an acceptable version) in any of the video applications I have (FCS 2, Commotion, AE, and even Shake).

One caveat, however: When I did this, Photoshop would stop with an error after batch processing a couple hundred stills, so I created a number of subfolders that each contained only two hundred images. Photoshop usually got through all of them, but when it did not, I would create another subfolder with the remaining unprocessed stills from the 200 in the first folder and apply the action to the subfolder. This may sound kind of complicated, but I was able to process about 15,000 frames in a 2-3 hours with this workflow.

Hope that helps,
Kevin

Hi Night,

Likely as not, you shouldn't be using "Filmstrip" but rather an automate process via File>Automate>Batch

You would need to create a Macro of the "Batch" process of the filter you want to apply to all the images to one image and save it to a dummy file and give it a name to refer to in the "Actions" Palette so you can call it up in the Automate window.

Everything else is pretty self explanatory. It just needs places to point to so as to save new files and such.

If you have a problem, feel free to PM me.

My best.

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks kwoff and MikeGunter.

The version of photoshop I'm using is Photoshop CS 8.0. I'll try to do it with a batch process but I'll have to read it at the photoshop help becouse it is something I have never done before. With this method how do you import then .psd files later on to the FCP timeline, one by one?????

Thanks again.

Hi Night,

I am a Windows user, but here is a tutorial that should help in showing how to import a sequence as a movie to FCP. It's dated, but I suspect it will lead you to the right track.

Hope it helps.

What I have done, which is also what is suggested in the FCP 6 manual, is to open the numbered image sequence (which should all be in one folder) in Quicktime Pro and then export a Quicktime movie in whatever format you choose (I typically use the Animation codec). You can then import the quicktime movie into FCP. If you import the image sequence directly into FCP, without first converting it into a movie as described above in Quicktime Pro, you would have to insert each numbered image individually into the FCP timeline.
