Canon XH-A1: 60i vs 24f

Hi all (especially disjecta). I'm using an A1 with my Letus Extreme (LEX) 35mm adapter. I've already loaded into the A1 the custom preset you gave for that kind of setup.

But I have a more basic question regarding the best frame rate setup for suich a setup. Should I set my frame rate at 60i or 24f? Which one will produce a much better film look with the LEX?

Thank you.

Try 24f and see how you like it. Be careful to move the camera slowly when panning and tilting the camera to avoid strobing. 60i has more of a hyper-real look to it, like soap operas. 24f records as 24 frames per second, same as film.

Thank you disjecta. I noticed strobing with 24F that's why I asked. Since I like your footages, do you use 60i or 24f?

Disjecta, one more piece of info. When using the LEX adapter, which AE mode do you record with? Auto? TV? AV or Manual? Do you switch AE modes depending on conditions? Since the Canon zoom and Focus are fixed and locked to the GG of the adapter constantly, does it make sense to record in any other mode than Auto? Do you set your Iris wide open my manually fix it to f1.6?

I shoot manual exclusively so I cannot advise you one way or another on the other modes. I don't think I've ever shot in any other mode. I don't leave anything to chance so auto is simply not an option for me.

I am always changing the opening in the iris and using the in-camera NDs depending on the light conditions.

Thank you. So the custom preset you gave us for XH-A1+LEX is best suited for Manual AE for best performance? I'll only shoot on Manual mode exclusively from now on. I'm a newbie and I just want to learn from and do like the best.

Thanks again.

The preset is independent of the exposure. They are two different things. Whether you shoot manual or full auto, you are simply talking about how the exposure of a shot is determined. The way the color, contrast, sharpness, etc. are determined is controlled by the preset.
