Letus Extreme : Dust and cleaning

Has anyone had to deal yet with dust inside of the adapter? I am not quite sure if it is on the mirrors themselves, on the ground glass or what not. My feeling is that its on the GG itself due to the fact that when i focus on the GG, the dust becomes the most visible.

Here is a picture of the inside of the adapter looking at the GG.

I thought these things were dust proofed and sealed before shipment? Has anyone found a safe way to clean these things?

I am in no way a handy man so i fear having to open one of these up to clean away the dust. With my old static adapter it was simple, but this tank is much more complex than the old adapters.

thanks guys.

I have the same problem. Been trying to clean mine by blowing compressed air on both sides of the GG, but the dust specs and hairs seem to be INSIDE the unit.

Dont think it has affected the shooting though. Gonna do some more tests this weekend and see if it is showing up in the footage...

as minimal as it may be, one cannot forget the fact taht there is indeed dust inside, which can at some point move to another point on the GG. Right now i am lucky as they are close to off frame, but who knows if they move around. Regardless, i need to get this guy cleaned.

Talk to Hien Le if you haven't. I actually am the reason why dust was in my unit and after talking to hien, it's as clean as can be.

how were you the reason? I have not opened anything except what was required to install the nikon mount, and square the camera mount to the adapter mount.

where is hien at, i wanna clean this sucker and keep it clean :)

I think you should email him so he can tell you what to do. Because, I didn't and ended up pulling one of the posts otu of my unit, almost ruining it.

And, I was the issue because I tore the unit apart to see what it did when I got it, then reassembled. Force of habit.

ah okay, well i havent toyed with it to any amount. So not sure why i got specs on my GG.

calling hien!

a big thank you to hien Le, who helped me very clearly on the phone. Letus's support is next to none. cheers boys!

It's not even a secret. It's just he walks you through it to make sure you don't break something.

A dust can is really all you need but for some reason it's just easier when Hien tells you to do it.

lol exactly. But man, hes a nice guy, cheery sounding, father of a noisy child :) but just a nice guy to talk to. Its always great to do business with the right people.

So what did he tell you to do for cleaning? Is this some kind of secret?

i guess the reason it is best to have him walk you through it as opposed to doing it on your own, is that the three pegs holding the ground glass CANNOT be touched ( too hardly ) because it will throw the backfocus off.

turns out the dust was on my condensor, which is why it was still apparent with the GG vibrating. So i air dusted it out and voila! finished.

There are three screws on the nikon mount tube piece ( the part that sticks out from the flip section ) that you remove very carefully, then you clean the glass that protects anything from hitting the GG form the outside, then you carefully air dust the gg on top, underneath, and the condensor element directly underneath.

question is,, if i added a macro lens infront of the adapter, could i zoom in less and keep an extra stop of my camera?

That's what happened to my unit. I ended up getting dust under the GG and had to use a blower and a lens cloth to clean it off. Had some footage with a hair on it which sucked.

Now it's all clean and I'll never take it apart again.

Not sure about your macro lens kinda deal.

how did you manage to squeeze a lens cloth under the GG, i was too scared to try!

I think I used a q-tip and just kinda folded it over to get it in there. But be wary, I DID pop out one of the posts and had to get Hien to tell me how to put it back in.

Bad me.

What do you mean "a" Papa, there were 3

I just ordered a Letus EX. Part of the reason I ordered it was because the casing seemed so much more professional and dust resitant than the FE is.
If I don't take the EX appart at all am I still gonna get dust in it? Am I gonna have to go through this dust cleaning once at the beginning for sure? Is this just a process you have to do before ever shoot?
thanks,
sns
