Where to buy competitively priced desktop...

This question is not for me but for my brother. He wants a new desktop computer (his current one is 7 years old). He doesn't need anything fancy which is why he is looking in the $600 dollar range. My knee-jerk reaction was to suggest DELL. However, I have a DELL laptop. Spec wise its a great computer and I got it for a very competitive price. However, my 5 year old desktop is still a MUCH better performer. Seems fishy. So, I'm not a huge DELL fan.

I hear great things about HP laptops in this forum, however, I know 3 people with HORRIBLE HP desktop computers. But who knows? Maybe they got the act together.

So, I am asking all of you good dvxusers one and all. Anyone have a good bead on a good desktop computer or a place that sells them at a competitive price? All I got right now in the way of a suggestion is DELL. But I have a funny feeling that isn't necessarily the best option...

Thanks-
Rick

No. The specs on my laptop are great. But the performance lacks. I just question the quality of their components.

When it comes to PC's, I'm only for Dell.

Dell has their Dell Inspiron 531 Desktop w/ Dell 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor for $659 Shipped plus a $100 Gift Card! Follow the steps below to get the deal:
  • Click here to Start Configuring your Dell Dimension 531 Desktop Computer
  • On the Select My Processor page, choose the option: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core 5000+ [add $70]
  • On the Select My Monitor page, choose the option: 24 inch E248WFP Entry Widescreen Digital Flat Panel Monitor [add $290]
  • On the Select My Video Card page, choose the option: 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8300GS [add $50]
  • Continue configuring your Dell Inspiron 531 as you please. When you are finished, click on Buy Now and then Add to Shopping Cart
  • On the My Cart page, where it says, "Enter coupon number," enter the coupon code: 4J1M7748R2RRV6 and then hit Apply Coupon
  • Your cart total should be $659.00 and the following discounts should appear in your cart, "Save $350 on all Inspiron Desktop purchases over $999" and "Get a $100 Gift Card on systems $999 - $1248 (cards to arrive in 6-8 weeks)"
This coupon expires after 4000 uses, so it will go by fast. The 24" Dell LCD monitor retails, by itself, for nearly $470, which is like getting the entire computer for only $190. And on top of that, you get free Ground Shipping and a $100 Gift Card!

And I was just about to log off and get back to work. Thanks for the info arges03! I appreciate it!

Rick

EDIT: I re-read this computer...its not a good deal. It looks like a GREAT deal. I might have to chuck my own desktop...thanks again!

i saw that on bfads.net and was going to suggest the same thing. :)

I stick with Dells for notebook computers.

But with Boxx for desktop equipment.

Although from your description a Boxx would be overkill, and too $$$.

Dell has been kind to me in all areas; product, support, reliability. I've bought my last 5 computers from them.

dell specials can't be beat, but their computers get really expensive for the high end stuff. i would recommend building you own for that. :)

I have a dell (a few at various points in time), and I recommend them to almost anyone that ask me where to buy a PC. But I also tell them, if you want to do anything special later (raid, OC, chip or mobo upgrade, add any special hardware) .....then listen to ugafan and build your own.

For those of you who chimed in this thread, I appreciate it immensely.

I went ahead and made that DELL purchase (my bro gave me all his info) last night. I still cannot believe what a deal that was. I mean, 24" widescreen monitor? You kiddin me. So yeah, its bought.

So thanks again. For his needs, I'm sure he'll be very happy with it.

You blame Dell for the laptop you bought ? They build what you need.

I bought a dell Laptop six months ago. It had good specs but was horrible and dog slow. Then I UPgraded to XP from Vista. Wow! Now it's smokin' fast!

However, one other thing, Dell is loaded up with crap bloatware. Very annoying.

Bloatware is a bunch of crap programs like realplayer, jukebox, dell's helpdesk thing, maps, money market help stuff.

I always format my computers when I get them and start from scratch.

Seriously? Shoot. I should give that a try. Heck, even my dvd burner takes 1/2 hour at least to back up large files. Well, that thar might be the answer for me!

I bought XP a long time ago. I don't even boot a new PC w/out that in the DVD tray. That way I know my load is clean. Then just check the Device Manager and see what drivers you need to download from the manufactures site. It will always keep it as clean as possible.

I cannot emphasize enough. Night and day. Just make sure you get the proper drivers, available from the Dell Website. You Dell will fly once you dump that crummy joke of an OS called Vista.
