Letus Extreme DOF Tests 50 mm

Hello, New to all of this, but the guys at Letus helped me out a great deal. They also recommended Cavision, whiched turned out to be the most rad rail system i could ask for, These tests were shot using the HVX-200 , shot at 24PN to the P2 Card, with a Letus Extreme , a Nikon 50mm set a t 1.4, and the HVX shutter OPEN. Hien from Letus told me to keep it at 2.8 or something but I dont know, I jsut like breaking rules i guess. IF this is something i should not be doing , please , let me know. The edit is weak and long, its jsut to show the depth I am getting out of the Letus with a peice of glass I picked up for 80 bucks.

Some of the camerawork is jsut horrible! I know! No need point it out! ahah just depth test here

This is ALL untreated footage, straight out of the camera....

I am an animator design so I am just getting into this type of thing, so I would love pointers on using these lens adapters as well as good glass I should into buying. I love my Nikons HA!

one again, HVX-200 24PN LEtus Extreme Nikon 50mm at 1.4

hey man, just had a watch and it looked pretty neat. Most of your shots were over exposed so it was difficult to really evaluate the bokeh/depth of field. But one reason that it is recommended to shoot at F2 or 2.8 is because if you examine your out of focus area ( bokeh ) it is very hazzy and creamy like. What one tries to gte is sharp bokeh so that it looks less fuzzy. Stepping down your lens a stop or two will do this.

cheers!

Looks good Chad - I'm sure you figured out that having a Follow Focus really helps ;)

I'm using a new IndiFOCUSpro for some LEX test shoots and its really making things a lot easier.

Can't get past that 4:2:2 color space with the HVX200 - I need to upgrade from the DVX100b!

Thanks for posting!

Thanks for the response! Yes VERY Over exposed. The morning shots on my balcony (The Blond Action Figure) was shot without ND, which was out of pure ignorance. . . or because i woke up a bit late and shot it right before I went to work =)

Now, Regarding the stops, Should I stop down on my lens, and leave the Iris open? Or should I stop to 2 or 2.8 on the HVX and stop to 1.4 on my lens.

The Haziness is because I am still using cheap lenses, I am about to buy a nice 1.4 35mm so hopfully, my next test will be better.

So the question is, Leave the Iris open and stop to 2.4 on the Lenes, or stop to 2.8 on the HVX and leave the lens on 1.4

Thanks

Can I find a follow focus that will work with the range of lenses that I will be buying . . . Didn't seem like it. The lenses range from 80-200 mm Nikon, to a 50mm Nikon, to a 35mm, to whatever else I can find., What do you recommend?? Is there a general one that will work with all these damn manual focus lenses.

BY THE WAY, I am using a SpiderBrace when I shold some of the REALLY shaky stuff. I have a DP so I am not that concerned with that stuff, but its good to know! Thanks for the reply !

What lenses are you using with you IndiFOCUSpro ?

THANKS!

From all of the research I did the IndiFOCUSpro seemed to be the best value for my dollar.

I've been using 28mm Canon FD, 50mm Nikon, and 135mm Canon FD lenses so far and no problem.

Here is a review from freshdv.com but a BIG heads up on this review is that the model reviewed in these videos was an OLD model and the new "IndiFOCUpro" has virtually no "give" or "play" when you use it:

Also - here is another review (which is also old) from dv.com:

I shot some beach footage today in Santa Cruz, CA and I used the IndiFOCUSpro, IndiRAILS, DVRigPro HD, and the LEX - I'll post the footage hopefully tonight or early tomorrow.

Wow man Thats GREAT news, I was nervous about a Follow Focus because of the different lenses. Thank you Very Much! I will look into this and I def. await your tests.

Thanks Again

actually, stephen/disjecta did a test with the letus extreme with his lenses, and showed that if you leave the 35mm lens completely open at F1.4 or F2, you get the donut hazzy bokeh, once he stepped it down to 2.8 and 4 he noticed, and very rightly so, that you get the nicer bokeh, which is sharper and more defined and creamy. Give it a shot.

It is also save to say that closing your camera iris down will provide a sharper over all image as a cameras lens performs at its peak around the F4 area, but that is, of course, if light is permitting. Otherwise i leave mine as open as possible, which is F2.6 after zooming in to frame the GG.

well, if you are zoomed in your iris closes down. Wide open is generally doable when you are at full wide, but once you get more telephoto, the iris will close.

Stuff looks GREAT MAN! I LOVE the Beach shots, they feel sooooo mcuh like film it is incredible! Nice Work. Your specs were a bit out of title, so I wasnt able to see them, would you mind posting the specs again? Iris, Lens, Stops, Etc.

THANKS MAN!! LOOKS KILLER!!
