New Nebtek monitor

I found it strange that the Panasonic BT-LH80W only had input connectors, no through-out connector.

Granted, broadcast cameras usually have two HD-SDI outputs, so that solves the feed to the on-board camera and Director/Production monitor (or an OB Van). Unfortunately, for the HVX user, you would have to run a Component cable to the Production monitor (could be some distance), then via the through-out connector, back to the camera for on-board monitoring. I just don't see this as ideal as a current HVX user, so that was another factor that sold me on the Nebtek HDS. I went HDS for longevity in my case.

Good point here, only input connector for the Panasonic. Here is what Rod answered me on that question: "That is the reason why our connector box offers matching outputs (with self-terminating loop thru) for every input. You can cable out from the camera to our monitor and then from our monitor out to the the BT-LH1700W"

And Luis, my pleasure.

I should have the new Nebtek NEB70HD in a day or two, I will give my first impression soon. What I can say now is the nice and fast contact I had with Rob from Nebtek.

I ran a test yesterday on the Nebtek NEB70HDS model (Component/HD-SDI), using 12 month old Spec Com 6000mAH batteries on both the HVX and Nebtek. The HVX ran out of power first, at just under 3 hours. The Nebtek monitor ran for 3 hours and 5 minutes.

Impressions on the Nebtek Monitor on Location:
We went on location out West shooting a doc. We had a Varicam and HVX200's , a Marshall and the new Nebtek HDS model.
Here were our field conditions.
We shot 80% outdoors in bright sunlight (there were no cloudy or rainy days).
Our DP used the monitor in various capacities and numerous times in tough conditions outdoors on lakes, rivers and creeks- we were shooting on river boats, shooting in the river on sticks & from the bank- Just about as bright a situation as you can get.
The Director, was most impressed as he has been using "Marshals" on numerous
Varicam shoots he has been on the last 2 years. Excellent Image, very good viewing angles. The conditions were extremely hot, bright and reflective. We used the monitor moderately in run and gun with the HVX200 and it performed very well.
We used the Nebtek unit on our Varicam as well (during a 1/2 day of outside interviews on sticks).
With the 35mm Brevis Adapter the "Flip" was great! Images were quick to fine focus. In almost all situations the anti reflective screen seemed to do the trick with the exception of "bright direct sun over the shoulder -a direct shot on the screen".
I was impressed with the Nebtek unit, and think it is a great small monitor, but was more interested in the Director & DP's comments, "much brighter easy to use display"- "functions fit our needs " They felt it had an edge over the Marshall.
Battery time was never an issue, we used the DVX user batteries, they lasted longer than on the HVX 200. This is a sturdy well built monitor. cbdv

Does anybody know how the BT-LH80W is in sunlight? The Nebtek sounds great, but the build quality of the Panny is hard to let go of, better sunlight viewing would swing it for us.

Hi Everybody... looks like I'm back on the boards so fire away with your questions!

I can't speak about the BT-LH80W, but I can tell you that I need to put a hood on our BT-LH1700W everytime we take it outside.

Would you like to demo one of our new HD units to see what you think of our build quality versus Panasonic?

P.S. How's everything going in AUS Chris?

Hi Rob, I didn't had the time to do a full test of the new HD unit, but from what I saw until now, I'm very happy. The image is really clear and the focus assist work perfectly and the colors are quite accurate. The flip image is a excellent feature, I prefer to have the control in the right side when I need to adjust something. It look strongly build too. I will start to use it on the field with the Pana 17" this week-end.

Also Rob, do you know where I can find a solid component connector and a shorter one. The Panasonic cable seem weak.

Hi Shadow,

Thanks for the compliments. I am always happy to hear that we "got it right"!

Most of the people I know are having custom cables built for the HVX-200, because they don't like the Panasonic brand cable either. I know that there are cable companies out there that will build them (like Pacific Cable), but they charge a lot of money for them. One customer that I know of paid $135 each for a pair of custom built Panasonic (I think thats some type of mini-USB on the camera end) to BNC Component cables.

I have a Z1U Component cable. I did not mind the build quality (it is a nice solid gauge cable), but I really did not need 3 feet of it. The extra cable was always getting in the way when I mounted the monitor to the camera. I had my techs trim the length down to 2.5 feet and replaced the RCA's with BNC Connectors, and I'm pretty happy with that.

All the Best!
Rob

Sounds great- as a Nebtek/Marshall owner I've been looking forward to this since Rob told me about it a year ago. I've been wanting something sharper than my Marshall for awhile.

Here's a bunch of questions:

1. How does the color quality compare with a Marshall and a BTLH-80W?

2. How does the weight compare with a Marshall?

3. If you spring for the SDI version, do you sacrifice any other inputs or does it just add the SDI?
(would the SDI be available later as a mod or add-on?)

4. I've thought about the BTLH-80W recently alot and the lack of throughput + needing new battery system had put me off.

Just as a question though, If you used the BTLH-80W and put splitters on your component cables cable running out from the camera - would that work as well?

4. Do you anticipate a version with a waveform anytime soon?

5. How does off- axis viewing differ on the Nebtek vs. Marshall and the BTLH-80W?

Thanks

Lenny Levy

Link to Nebtek?

Link to Nebtek?

Not sure if I'm missing something.
I've been looking for Rob's model number "BT-LH80W" under the Nebtek website, and I can't seem to find this monitor anywhere. Anyone has a direct link to other than a PDF?

Just an FYI, Nebtek just added their NEB70HD to their website purchase catalog.

I just ordered myself a unit last night. What sold me in addition to all the great specs, were the features: flip and battery solutions.

Having seen the letusEX and the brevis flip, I'm don't think I want to use that akward configuration..... at least not all the time. Having the Nebtek means that I can keep my monitor right side up (as well as my image) when I'm using the brevis (no flip config).

Thanks for everyone's input. I'll be sure to post my thoughts on the unit when it arrives next week.

Hi Arrik, you won't be disappointed, the new Nebtek is a really good monitor. I'm really happy with it in all aspects.

I had a Swit Varizoom and found it very tricky to focus with so I returned it. Today I tested the Panasonic and the Ikan side by side. For sure the Panasonic is great because of all the features (red focus assist, wave form, pixel to pixel, etc.). However, I must say, the Ikan was not bad for focusing either. It does not have those assist features, but the image looked good enough for focusing. I only tested it indoors, though, so I don't know how it would do outdoors. Anyone tested it outdoors?
The big disappointment I had with the Panasonic was the weight. I use the Redrock M2 and sometimes do handheld work with the Zacuto, so I must have an on-camera LCD that I can use in the front of me for framing and focusing. With the Panasonic the whole setup became much more front-heavy, almost too much to be comfortable. Also, the monitor seemed too heavy for the israeli arm. It seemed alright if I didn't move too much or didn't tilt and pan too quickly. But otherwise the arm didn't feel right with so much weight on it.
I haven't tried the Marshall or the Nebtek, but I've read some complaints that the Marshall is also very heavy. Checking on the descriptions on the web I found the following: Ikan 1.07 Lbs, Marshall 1.8Lbs, Nebtek 2.5 Lbs, Panasonic 3.3 Lbs, .
I was leaning towards the Nebtek, but after having this bad experience with the Panasonic, it seems the Nebtek might be on the heavy side too? Has anyone tried it on a handheld setup? Also, does it have loop troughput?

Hi Tuki Jencquel,

Is it what you mean by loop throughput ?

Good point here, only input connector for the Panasonic. Here is what Rod answered me on that question: "That is the reason why our connector box offers matching outputs (with self-terminating loop thru) for every input. You can cable out from the camera to our monitor and then from our monitor out to the the BT-LH1700W"

Hi Tuki Jencquel,

No, I didn't try it handheld but I did try with my Panasonic 7" and it was ok and the Nebtek is not much more heavy. It should be ok if well balanced.

i sent an email to rob dubree with the same questions and this is what he answered:

"The NOGA Arm will support the weight of our monitor as long as there is a
bend in the arm. The ZACUTO arm should hold better than a NOGA, especially
when bouncing along. My personal favorite is the UltraLight Equipment (see
attached). it can be expensive, but it locks down better than anything I've
ever used before."

"All of our monitors have matching outputs for video loop through. Our parent
company has been providing Video Assist for Feature Films and Television for
over 20 years. As a former Video Assist tech I know how valuable a second
set of outputs can be."
