Editing A 150 Min Film On Vegas

Yes David > The problem at my place is that the guys have a max of about 4 P2 cards and that seems like a no go situation. Plus its a lot of moving with long sequences of movement.

David,

I read the raylight manual yesterday and was wondering whether using raylight to convert to avi and then help with the final rendering will result in any quality losses (aka: the same footage used with another editing software that accept the mxf files would come out better).

Have you experienced any problem with raylight not being able to relink the avi to the mxf files (glitches, hangups etc...).

Their idea is pretty narly, if it works 100% :).

Share your experiences please....

I never convert to AVI -- there's just no need, unless you also want to work with a program which can't read the MXFs or use Raylight (like After Effects, though I understand that's about to change, maybe on both counts).

The only thing I'll say about Raylight which has been any problem, and I understand I'm one of the few to have reported the problem, is that it sometimes, very rarely, has goofed up linking the correct audio to the clips. This has always been remedied simply by closing the project and reopening it, or by closing Vegas and restarting it. It's a problem being worked on.

But don't take that as more than it is. Like I said, it's very rare, and easily remedied. It's a very minor glitch.

Raylight tutorial reads:

"For Premiere Pro and Sony Vegas, with computers that are fast enough to run in Raylight Yellow or Raylight Blue, the MXF files from your camera can be inserted directly into your project.
For all other applications, you must convert the MXF files to Raylight AVI's for editing."

So I assume you have fast system. Which brings me to my next VITAL question. My PC expert is going to upgrade my computer system this week-end. We are putting together my shopping list (oh joy MORE MONEY to spend).

We had problems figuring out what size drives and how many I will need to hold 3000 min of footage PLUS the extra backup copy of that footage.

I am figuring that the ratio would be 20/1 meaning I film 20 min of footage to edit down to a 1 min scene. Am I about right, and if so, what are the largest drives available (we found 1 Terrabyte, but I heard of 1.5, is that correct? Are there any larger ones?)

In short, what hard drives would you recommend I buy, how large should each drive be and how many total will I need?

Also: travel drive for backup while on the field. Recommendation?

THANK YOU, I HAVE TO GO TO THE STORE TOMORROW AND BUY ALL OF THIS, so your input is very much appreciated David.

Well, 20:1 is a pretty big ratio. I'd see if you can get that way down, or you may be editing for years.

A terabyte drive should do you; probably for more than one project, actually.

As for the computer, get the most processor speed you can, and after that, the most RAM you can.

Workflow...

Workflow...

Faith, you might also want to check out this thread about workflow with the P2 cards (you are still shooting on the HVX 200, right?) Link:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?p=1008422#post1008422

My workflow: pasted from that thread:

We just finished an HVX feature shoot where we did this. Workflow: 1) Offloaded all P2 Media via PCMCIA to two NTFS-Formatted External USB Drives (total of four 500GB drives with redundant storage) via P2 Genie installed on a Core 2 Duo Sony Vaio laptop. 2) At end of day, offloaded these drives via USB to a G5 Mac Dual 2.0 onto External USB Drives through the Import P2 function of Final Cut 5.1.4. At this point, the MXF files became Quicktime. 3) All original PC / NTFS drives put into storage for archiving. That's it. We're now editing. Never had a glitch or problem of any kind, although a few people in forums warned us against it. Proceeded with the workflow after testing and common sense told us it should work. I also read an online article on Little Frog in High Def that gave pretty detailed instructions on how to do this:

Faith, feel free to email me at mark@daisy3pictures.com with any questions. And good luck!

PS - are now in the scoring and sound design stage of our second feature, "Ready? OK!" and as always, love Vegas! Started this project in Final Cut (we have both Final Cut and Vegas set-ups) and just do better work in Vegas...

David, I have a question regarding raylight. I bought it, installed it and set it up according their instructions, I also set my vegas project according to their instructions. I have no problem opening my mxf files, i can watch them, edit them in the timeline etc. So far so good.

But here is my question. I am confused with how the raylight control panel (which allows to decide if you want to preview in blue, yellow or red mode) works:

Currently I set the initial software to BLUE as an experiment .

Then when the control panel appeared and I opened vegas, the panel dis not indicate which of the 4 buttons is active. All look the same (none outlined). if I click on a new button (ex: Yellow) it becomes outline with a darker edge, and any media in the timeline now read: MEDIA OFFLINE. ?? I tried to bring in a new clip and it will go on the timeline with no problem and play fine and will not have any "offline" warning on it. But when I then look at my control panel again it has reverted again to not showing which of the modes I am in (all button look light grey, nothing outlined in black).

So how does this work? I am confused.

David, are you able to see your thumbnail photos in explorer? I can't.

I can only view clip thumbnails and clips INSIDe of vegas using the Project Media window.

Can one rename the clips?

how do you organize your clips? can a P2 card content be split, meaning oms oe fth clips you filmed on that card go somewhere and others go elsewhere...

I usually like to store my footage in seperafe SCENE folder 9each scene has it's own folder with the footage that goes with it.

But now I fear i will not be able to go that route if i cannot split P2 card contents and "sort" footage per scene.

Sorry I didn't see any of these posts earlier.

As for the Raylight configurations -- yeah, I wish it was more clear at a glance of the buttons which mode it's in, but maybe that'll be in a later update. In any case, just going back to the configuration screen will tell you the current mode. I have shortcut in my taskbar for it.

As for why you saw "media offline," perhaps you clicked on a window outside of Vegas?

You can't view thumbnails outside of Vegas; I'd suggest downloarding the P2CMS software from Panasonic.

You can rename the clips, but you'll have to rename the audio, too. Again, this is something I'd do in P2CMS.

I organize my P2 material by date of the shoot and by the order the cards are captured.

In Vegas, you can either save scenes as separate project files, or you can create separate bins in the media pool.

In the case of a large project (full feature), do you think it is best to keep all the P2 card contents in one big flder called "FOOTAGE" for ex? Or put them in sub folders under each scene folder?

I can see pluses and minuses in doing it either way. the second way you have yoru clips sorted on yoru hard drive by scene, might help in finding them faster outside of vegas. BUT, it might also make it harder to browse through misc footage because they are now scattered in many different locations.

How do you do it?

programmed a crop yesterday with 4 key frames in one clip.

When I viewd it back it did not play back right. the crop was all out of whack and the image started stretching sideways... not at all what I had programmed. raylight unable to communicate with vegas? Or??

Have you ever had that problem?
