MOTU has announced new Firewire Video/Audio I/O for DVCPROHD/DVCPRO

kAKU: Could you ask if MOTU is thinking in a V3HD portable version or in an special and simple enclosure for this baby? I need it portable....so an enclosure will be a good solution for that....I guess.....

I don't think they're saying you can RECORD uncompressed HD/SDI via firewire... I think they say their device transcodes HD/SDI on the fly for capture of compressed video over firewire.

They are working late night everyday to finish this baby, but it won't be ready this summer.

Deparon, the V3HD is design how it is now and they are concentrating on finishing it up. As you can see how they have the whole audio I/O lineup and we can guess what they can do, but I would say they won't come out with another one any time soon. I would suggest MOTU, probably the same reason you want it portable, I would want them to make one so ample size firewire raid drive could be attached or something so portable cpu, video i/o and firewire raid drive can be treated as one solid peice.

Uncompressed is only for SD, for HD, it is only with DVCPRO HD when it go through firewire. One thing I'm not sure of is that if inputs and outputs with real time conversion remains uncompressed or not. I will ask MOTU.

MOTU has announced what?

MOTU has announced what?

First, who announced what? The website link from the initial thread has nothing to do with MOTU as far as I can see. Though that's a nifty computer graphic of something that has a similar design to existing MOTU products.

The product is not listed or "announced" on the official MOTU web site. www.motu.com

So basically, this thing does not exist.

Second:

definitely looks sweet, but from experience some of Motu's firewire systems have wreaked havoc on PC's and in addition Motu's customer service is very hard to get in touch with. You can search out some of the Motu forums and they will back my statement up. The number they post on their site answers with "this number is disconnected". Just a word to the wise.

As a user of MOTU products for almost 15 years, I'm offended by this casual attack against a company that has provided incredible value to the worldwide music and audio community.

Perhaps you could direct us to the actual MOTU forums where these firewire problems are detailed. Maybe you could show us the actual page at MOTU's official site where this supposed "disconnected" phone number is listed. If you're going to make slanderous statements, you might want to list your sources and back this up with some hard evidence.

Textrue,

V3HD is going to be available, I had received OFFICIAL announcement from Jim Cooper @motu about this product, so it will be available around 4th quater.
MOTU probably wanted to keep this product separately not to confuse the music/audio customers. It's a branding strategy.
But thank you as be half of MOTU (I'm the distributor in Japan) about supporting MOTU's business and you will be excited when you actually see V3HD.

So, you are from Kailua, I lived in Kaimuki for 6 years while back and know most of the guys in the music industry there (though my connections are 20 years old).

Keep in touch.

Just in case if you want to make sure this product is coming from MOTU, check the contac link (http://www.v3hd.com/contact.html) then send email to MOTU.

As a Mach Five user waiting for Mach Five 2, I wouldn't put too much weight in a release date from them. I didn't know Jim Cooper was brought into MOTU. But I hope your right. I don't see an HDMI input on this prototype design. Would be cool for recording from my HV-20 into my Macbook.

Kaimuki? I used to like to eat at Irifune on Kapahulu nearby. Hmmm, wonder if they still have the old Macintosh 512 fish tank?

Textue,

That is pretty much the final specification. NO HDMI input, yeah I wish it had the HDMI input because I have HV20, too. This Jim Cooper is different Jim from JL Cooper, MOTU's Jim is one of the oldest member of MOTU, too. MachFive 2 is hot. It's coming soon. I didn't know Irifume had mac fisihtank.

Do you know Dean Sensui? He's the cameraman of Hawaii goes fishing. Him and I are mutual friend of Audy Kimura.

Actually more than I expected but imagine the audio will be better quality and the connectivity of the digital audio is better than Pro Tools with software like Digital Performer (MOTU should make audio only version AudioDesk to more powerful software in my opinion).

So I guess people who see the value in the better features of the audio appreciate this unit.

I just got this message from Motu. They are shipping this baby as we speak.
B&H has it in stock and it lists as US$2949.00. It seems that the specs didn't quite change from their first ones, it is still, unfortunately, DVCPROHD only. Maybe it's gonna be firmware upgradable?

Priced slightly more than what I think most here were expecting. I am sure most expected around $1999 list and maybe $1799 street. Am I right or were most expecting this price?

Is anyone here more likely or less likely to purchase this unit now that we know the price?

Issues with Leopard

Issues with Leopard

I bought the V3HD about 3 weeks ago, and shortly thereafter loaded Leopard on my G5. Ever since, my FCP version 5.14 stopped seeing the V3HD, and my G5 stopped seeing my HVR M10U, even when connected directly through firewire to the G5. Anybody? Any ideas? Any similar experiences? Hep me, somebody hep me!!

V3HD does DVCPRO and DVCPRO HD natively. Made to work good with that. ioHD seems to be native to ProRes422. Both could work with other formats depending on your host computer's ability, for example, V3HD can playback uncompressed HD or HDV footage using FCP6's "open timeline", while you select the output device to V3HD with similar output format in DVCPRO HD. And ioHD would be able to playback DVCPRO HD timeline with its output.

But what that means is that they both are played back within its in and out video process (DVCPRO HD for V3HD and ProRes422 for ioHD), FCP6 does the conversion.
I've been testing to process native HDV timeline playing back on V3HD's output and doesn't seem to be any problem, so I don't even convert from HDV to DVCPRO HD upon capturing, keep it native, but use V3HD to playback on professional monitor during editing, then if I wanted to put it back to native HDV, then use firewire and a HDV cam (HV20 in my case) for master to tape (this case I don't mess with image adjustment because I don't know what the consequences is like).

MOTU V3HD's great if you are doing SD 8bit uncompressed, SD 10bit uncompressed, DVCPRO, DVCPRO50 and DVCPRO HD. Plus tons of capabilities for wide range of audio application. If you can also do composing and audio engineering, V3HD can work as high grade audio interface to go with Digital Performer, Logic Audio, Nuendo and so on. No compromise comparing to any other high quality audio interfaces for native music/audio production software.

I have few clients purchased V3HD for simply using as converters, too. Japanese top class broadcast station and creative companies are buying it for thier conversion needs (even after we let them use it for a couple of weeks for them to check its signals and functions).

Also, I sold one to a sound person who records orchestra performance. I made up a set for him so he can provide and get HD video reference from AJA Gen10 to his XL H1 and V3HD and also, MOTU 8pre (audio interface with 8 channel mic preamps) are utilized by MOTU Digital Performer to record analog 8 channels from the mixers and 8 channels from microphones at the same time. The audio recorded to Digital Performer is synchronized to the Gen10, so the video recorded on XL H1 will be perfectly in sync upon the post. I tested this with my HPX555, too and aduio from the P2 card and audio from DP stays in perfect sync, so even with an hour of recording the phase stays perfectly with the sample accuracy, which means video won't even shift a sample unit (also I was doing 96Khz recording on Digital Performer, the embed aduio from SDI was up converted via V3HD).

If you are a type of person who really understand digital audio technology and video technology together, then you would appreciate V3HD more.

MOTU had considered all of the other video format, too but they chose DVCPRO HD because it was the best format to combine with the multichannel high quality audio formats within firewire 800 and 400 and most importantly, DVCPRO SD/HD formats are same as the camera format.

I've seen a person from Bogen Japan using Leopard with his Mac Book Pro and V3HD, but V3HD is not officially supporting Leopard at this moment.
For my Mac Pro 8 Core, the video doesn't even work.
MOTU has announced officially that they will come out with the Leopard support for V3HD soon.

Thanks Kaku.

I guess all we can do now is wait for Motu to come up with the Leopard drivers. I hope we don't have to wait too long.

I don't know what is different (maybe the graphic board/chip) on the Mac Book Pro that V3HD work with the Leopard, but yes, please wait patiently.

MOTU had come out with Leopard compatible driver while ago now and just to update with more news, they came out with Windows XP/Vista driver to use V3HD with Premiere Pro CS3.

And watch out for their appearance at NAB 2008 right by Red booth.
