K-tek Kssm user experience and feed back needed

I've heard so much about the k-tek kssm rubber suspension feet breaking during set up. Can you share your experience. Do you take the rubber suspension feet out first and put it on the mic and then on the mount. Or do you try to squeeze the mic in while the rubber suspension feet is on the mount?

I'm on course of buying one but the $20 replacement cost is abit high for a piece of rubber. So i want to know how to over come this breaking rubber problem.

I currently have a Rycote Softie Mount & Pistol Grip to use with the NTG2 and Okatava that I'm planning to buy. Is this good enough ?

Thank you inadvance

If you already have the Softie mount and it fits both of those mics then why not try it out and see how it goes?

I'm a big fan of the K-Tek mount... and I've never had one of the rubber bands break... I have two of the KSSM's with soft bands also... and I've had them for I guess 3-4 years or so? I just support the bands as I'm pushing the mic in... I can't see how you could even GET the mic in any other way... you hold the band at the hole and then push the mic through with your other hand... then once the mic is through both bands you kind of "walk it on" the rest of the way.

If your Softie does the job then why buy another mount? But if you NEED another mount then I'll be the first to say that I fully endorse the value of the K-Tek. Yes while it's $20 for (actually TWO pieces of rubber)... you'll notice that EVERYTHING video related is high compared to more universal products.

As long as we're on the subject... my Softie mount is a couple years older and it's starting to dry out... I can see tiny little cracks in the rubber when it bends as I slip a mic in or out... and if you think $20 is high for replacement rubber on the K-Tek then how do you feel about $65 to replace the rubber on your Softie?

Thanks for the info. A friend has a K-tek mount and he broke it after 3 times. I guess it has do with the way he push the mic into it .

Also after reading about a user reivew on B&H on the K-teh here:

I thought that it might be a problem about the K-tek. That is why I need more feed back about it before buying the mount.

Yes $65 is alot of money too. But the Softie rubber looks more solid then the K-tek mount rubber. But I guess over the years without conditioning the rubber, it will crack, like wise with the K-tek

I need another mount and they are priced at the same . So I guess it is the way that one pushes the mic into it that doesn't break the rubber feet .

Yes I've seen this happen, especially with people that don't know what they are doing.
Mount the mic and leave it mounted!!!! No need to take the mic off everyday, just store the whole deal already to go.

I agree with this. Normally I leave each Oktava in each of the KSSM mounts that I have... but sometimes I'll put an AKG in one of the mounts... and this mic is a larger diameter... but still... no problems.

I've read about people breaking BBG windscreens also... I'm glad I'm not impatient and ham-fisted with my gear. How could I have gone 3 years with the KSSM and never had a problem and some other guy breaks his on the third use?

*sigh*

This is why I don't lend out gear.

I will agree that the kssm is awesome! I have used mine tons of times and for my money there is nothing better. I use the same techique as Matt. I can't imagine breaking the rubber unless you were very careless and didn't support the band. If you break this thing, I am afraid to see how you handle your mics !
