NEW 1024x768 HD Monitor

claycle, are you Clay Luther?

I'm trying to get in touch with Clay Luther but my emails get returned. If he is in this board, Please PM me your e-mail and Phone number. Thanks.

Nothing serious, just want to be able to keep you updated on your delivery date.
Thanks.

Hi Siniarch,

Looks great! I was interested in getting the Carrion c, just wondering if you ship to the UK and if so what the total price will be? ($1695.00 + tax + shipping to UK). Also I may get one of the other models so if I could have the price for just the shipping that would be great.

Thank you.

hi withuk,

Yes I ship to the UK. as for shipping, I've set up Paypal to calculate it. what you can do is click on the purchase button, and then go to check out. I think you can calculate the shipping before you buy.

Please let me know if that works otherwise, I can verify what the shipping would be in some other way.

Thank you,

Luis Sinibaldi. :)

Luis,
Has anyone down a side by side with the "Carrion" ( I agree a disconcerting name BTW) and the new Panasonic or the new Nebtek monitors.

Also which Tekkon battery are people are talking about. I couldn't figure out much from their website. Where can you get them.

How come you left off the loop thru on the component.?That's really valuable for us HVXers (and others) who want to run a short cable to the on-board then run a long one to a monitor especially if we are handheld or on a dolly. Means twice as much cabling going to and from the camera.

Hi Leni,

hahahah. everyone is having problems with the name. I think i'm sticking with it though. I'm always swiming upstream to the spawning grounds of evil. ahahahah

For the tekkeon battery that I'm using, its the "my power all" MP3400. I don't think they make the 3400 any more, they have upgraded to the MP3450.
http://www.tekkeon.com/site/products-mypowerall.php
beautiful battery in my opinion.

as for the loop thru, I agree with you, I didn't want to leave it out, it just wasn't an option for me. Unless I was willing to spend tens of thousands in more development and re-design the controller board. (i'll look into a possible solution, but for now, I doubt it.)

Luis:

You cannot get mad if people start referring to the Carrion as the Vulture Fodder or rotten meat monitor then ;-)

I am very impressed with what you have done and I really want to buy one. I will be ordering as soon as I do a few more projects to pay for it.

When will you make the Tekkeon mounts available?

Thanks,

Dan

Hey Dan,
Nice Vulture Fodder, man maybe I'll change the name after all. hahahah

Thanks for the compliment. I'm actually pretty psyched about it myself. Its weird, mechanical things come easy to me, so I always think, hey anyone can do this, nothing special. But then some people remind me of how they could never do it. and the I think that i'm fortunate to be able to. At the end of the day, I hope I can make a little money to support my film endeavors, and provide good products at good prices. :)

As for the tekkeon mounts, I can have them ready in 1 to 1.5 weeks. I just haven't order them because I was waiting to finish the monitor and to find out which one people were interested.

Which one would you like the 1 tekkeon or the 2 tekkeon mount? Anyone else? please chip in and let me know what you guys want.

Thanks,

Luis

Hi Luis:

I would think that the 3450s would be the ones to get, they would have the longest run times and are still pretty cheap. It looks as if in the pictures you have posted, you need two of these mounts to hold the front and rear of the Tekkeon? Are your prices for a pair of the mounts or is that price for each and we need to order two?

I hope you make a lot of money with your products, you are truly addressing a small niche audience with the products they need in a timely manner. Good luck!

BTW, you might want to make the rounds and demo your monitor at places like the lafcpug.com meetings, etc. to get your products some more exposure. Almost everyone I know with an HVX would be VERY interested in the Carrion, but they have to know that it exists in order to want it. This board is popular but it's still pretty underground, if you know what I mean?

Dan

Inspiring stuff Luis!
Hope to be a customer soon enough. I read through both your threads and may have overlooked it, is there an flip option for those lucky enough to be shooting through 35mm primes?
Thanks,
Jason

Hi Dan,
Very perceptive Dan, you do need 2 of them, but the prices I put up there are for the pair. So you only have to order one set.

Thanks for the advise to show it around. I think I will. I'm already talking to DC and see if we can hold a HVX meeting in December.

Cannibal,
Thank you. Yes there is a flip function. so no worries there. I also let you mount it from the top and from the bottom.

Thanks for taking a look guys. :)

Hi Luis:

A couple other questions for yo in regard to the Carrion?

1. Are you able to offer any sort of warranty? With the luck I have been having with gear, I need a warranty of some kind. I baby my stuff and still my PowerBook has been back to Apple four times, my Aja Kona 3 breakout box's analog output just died, etc.

2. If I buy the basic TCHD-01a, is it possible to upgrade it to a single SDI input in the future for an addtional charge? Is the SDI input a module or is it a different board level input and it would not be easy to add it?

3. What sort of peaking function is there for focusing? We have all heard about the Panasonic's outline in red when in focus feature and the Nebtek has some sort of specific peaking function to assist. Does the TCHD-01a have an on/off peaking function or is there any sort of pixel magnification function like focus assist on the HVX?

I really like your feature set and some of the nice extras you have included. Great work!

Dan

Hi Dan (Puredrifting),
Thanks for your interest. I'll try to answer all you questions.

1. Warranty, this is a good one. I've been thinking hard about this one. What I think I've come up with is to implement a very strong method of tamper proof evidence. So if you open the box, then your warranty will be void. I will also have a Moisture proof seal which will warn me against any potential previous water damage that may have taken place, which will also void the warranty.

Other than that, I'm sure the box will be sturdy. So I will provide a warranty. How long? (I'm still figuring it out)

If I was making a killing on these units it would be easier to handle this as I would have a lot of capital to cover any units that need repair. Even the Big boys only offer 1 year warranty. Let me contemplate this a little longer. But know that as long as you guys are taking care of your monitor and it hasn't been damage by miss use, I will do my best to make sure I support it and repair it.

2. Yes, if you buy the TCHD-1a with no HD-SDI, I will provide an option to add the (1) HD-SDI option or the (2) HD-SDI option. Basically you will pay a premium for upgrading later, but it will be about $150 on top of the difference between the different models. (at the time of upgrade) Unlike other monitors that only let you choose either HD-SDI or Component, and once you choose one, you have no way to upgrade, I'm trying to cater to the indie community as well as the pros.

3. The only peaking function is a sharpening function. It does not have the Red Focus assist the Panasonic has. If you truly need that function, I'm afraid you will have to pay for it. As for the zoom, the monitor has a section in the menu (when in HD component only) that lets you choose from Normal Scan, Under Scan, and Custom. Under custom, you can zoom the image in slightly. I haven't measured it, but it seems to be about 20% zoom.

Update:
Hey guys, just wanted to give you an update:
I took the monitor to Brian Valente of Redrock Micro. (man I love that company. always there to help out the little guy.) I really just went to look at their follow focus and borrow some batteries, but he asked me to bring it. He seemed to really like it. I will let him chime in and give his opinion rather than me tell you guys what he thought.

Also, I finally tested the Anton Bauer Batteries and the IDX batteries, both worked well. (Brian lend me his. thanks again) and I will be testing how long these batteries power up the monitor.

Hi Jennyparis,
Yes, I will have a hood. if you check out my site, you can see it under the products section. At the top right. I was going to make it out of aluminum, but a friend of mine suggested to make it out of something soft. in any case, I have already planned out for holes in the case, so it can be screwed on rather than Velcro.
I've see the Hoodman and the Velcro never holds on well.
Any suggestions, metal, fabric, plastic?

Thanks,
Luis

Any suggestions, metal, fabric, plastic?

If it would be possible, something that can be attached using a single screw and fold up. Plastic hood with cloth? Easy to carry but probably not very sturdy or handy to keep in shape when screwed on with a single screw i guess.

Perhaps something like the suncreens they sell for Nikon LCD, you cover the back with a flip open sunscreen. Closed it protects the LCD opened its a suncscreen. Pretty big plastic mould stuff though, bit expensive to develope perhaps.

anyway.........

Am very keen as I need an HD portable monitor for 35mm adaptor work. Marshall are bringing out a portable HD monitor soon, not sure of the pricing, and was going to get it. Until I saw your monitor. How many have you sold now? Any to the UK.

I would need one with sdi and component. The only question mark for me is still the battery mount issue. The Tekkeon looks good but it is another different type of battery, another charger etc...What sort of price we looking at for V mount or even have you considered the sony NPF Z1 style batteries. Got stacks of those.

Best,

Philip

In very sunny environment, would be great to use it as an HD viewfinder [rather an HD FOCUSfinder], stopping most of light from top and sides, of course, and from bottom, too.
Rather molded plastic, in my opinion.

What about an extension (optional) with curved and soft edge (Avoiding marks on the face skin) when watching at the closest ? (for very bright outdoor conditions)
If we could use it under the sun at zenith on a very reflecting area, great!

Hi guys

Luis was kind enough to walk me through a demo at our studio. From the brief look it's a pretty impressive monitor. The image was excellent and it had all the features I wanted and more (we didn't even get through a demo of all the capabilities of the monitor, as we ran out of time. And I mean, we were at it for 30 minutes :) ) We didn't take it outside so I can't comment on the performance in direct light. It is a bit on the big side - after all it's an 8" monitor. I wouldn't expect to strap this onto my HV20 and have it still be an ultra-portable setup.

Luis borrowed our Anton Bauer and IDX batteries, and I know battery compatibility is high on his list.

visualbrother,
sorry I think it will require more than just one screw. but I'm working on it and I will let you know.

philip bloom,
I'm almost sold out of the first batch. none to the UK though. as for the batteries, I will have different options. as soon as that is all worked out, I'll put it on my web site. But just so you know, I tested the anton bauer (Hytron 50) and the IDX (Endura 7s) and they worked wonderfully.

Jennyparis,
as I've stated, I'll see what I can do regarding the curved and soft edge. So far the unit performs very well under the sun. even in direct sun light, but a hood would of course be better than no hood under such conditions.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for chiming in. Yes, at 8.4" screen its a little bigger than the marshall 7". So probably no good for the HV20. But its still about 1/2" shorter on one side from the expensive Panny. :)
Thanks again Brian.

Sincerely,

Luis

What I was thinking, and please see this pic link as inspiration only,
was a bit like this:

88_1.JPG

Although i see two problems already: blocks out the markings and will add to the overal size. But I like the folding / covering idea of this hood.

And on the power note, are you going to use that tiny round power plug? For some reason I have always hated those, not just because you can plugin the wrong source and blow things up but also over time they tend to slip out due to wear.

anything XLR like or with a locking thing would be so much better.

And I would like to ship mine to the Netherlands

This and the new micromattebox would complete my setup. :-HeadPhones(D
