Shooting Your First Feature??

Hey Brandon how did you get the distribution deal? Was it after that christian fest you entered? or you just looked around town for distribution?

thanks

inspiring. Definetely I want to do something I'm pationate about and that sells.

I've wrote this script about a girl who was raped when she was 5 and the movie basically concentrates on the aftermath(17 years later), her dealing with the problem and the people that surrounds her.

When I finished it I started hearing in the news and other shows about sexual abuse, the subject got pretty hot, I think it was back in 2006. the script has that garden state kind of feel.

but after negative comments like, the movie wont sell or don't make that subject your first movie I stop thinking about directing it, it took me an entire year to write it and research it.

I think I'm gonna make a movie about a killer hummingbird. wacha think?

I mean really, how much can we really get, distribution money, for a project shot on video. 100k? 10k? I just don't have clue about this and I would like to know what are some realistic numbers here.

some examples: the escape of the los santos(dvx), the motorhome massacre(dvx), limbo(canon xl) and other movies shot on video, these movies got distribution deals, I think motorhome massacre got it through Lions gate.

thanks again.

For your first film I wouldn't be too confident about getting much (if anything) up front. The distributor will most likely incur the cost of prints and advertising, which can be pricey. Lots of indies don't do a script clearance, E&O insurance, or Separate M&E tracks, all of which cost money and would be required before a deal. Often you are lucky if the distributor will pony up for that.

Obviously there are exceptions, and you you should get the best deal you can. But a low budget indie film, with no names will have a very hard time getting a deal at all. Getting real cash up front is even more rare.

it can vary greatly, depending on many factors. marketability, known actors, overall production quality, awards, etc... personally, i'm holding out for at least a million.

Actually we contacted several Christian distribution companies, and had several interested... then we were kind of thinking it wasn't going to happen, so we told the main company we were gunna self-distribute, and then they came back to us with a better offer! It's money upfront that pays for the budget of the film twice... and profit percentage as well... will give more details when it's ALL final :)

a good example of a movie that got distribution and had no name actors is THE PUFFY CHAIR.
