Extreme Riser - read this if you have Cavision parts...

Hi David:

I ordered the $100.00 setup from Jason this evening, it will arrive Friday. I'll let you know how it all works out.

Man, this getting all of this stuff to work together is the modern version of 50s-60s hot rod building. Since the DOF adapters are basically a hack, it is great that we have people like Dennis, Jason, Brian at Red Rock and the boys at Zacuto to help us to get all of this stuff to work together. I am confident that once I have it all assembled, it is going to work out perfectly. Will post some pics once I get it all up and running.

Best,

Dan

Dan-

looking forward to some pics of that setup.

And this whole digital and adapter era reminds me of the early 20th century when all the camera and film people basically invented their own tools and gadgets... in a way :)

Jason-

this looks like the perfect solution. I will call you tomorrow!

when all the solutions are posted in pictures, ill buy my gear. i dont want to go through piece after piece trying to find the solution. so thanks to everyone here!! hehe, just a bit further to go then im sure the solution will be clear and doable for all.

Okay, for anyone who wants in on the group buy for the Letus35 Extreme Cavision Upgrade for the RS15II/M system, PM me over the next couple of days to be added to the list.

We'll add our DVXUser discount to each package and consolidate the shipping from our normal international rates. Our list price on the RS15II-L35X retrofit kit is $98.

If anyone has additional questions on this, feel free to drop me a line.

David,

Here you go -

The wedge is at the top attached to the riser and there is mounting slot on it to drop a screw through the slot in the plate to connect the two. I'm not sure if we have the screw to connect the two, but the option is there.

Hi Jason:

If you don't have the screw, can you give us the specs on the head type (is it Allen, I assume like the rest?), diameter, length, thread count/type so we can begin seeking it out?

Thanks,

Dan

I must personally recommend the Zacuto setup with their Z-Riser. Raise your lens rather than your camera. Check it out here.

I agree that Zacuto setup could provide more stability, but the logo will be upside down. :-)

That's more like what you'd see on a professional swing-away system. A primary set of rods and the auxillary set. The Zacuto seems to have three sets. Add a swing-away set and you've got four sets of rods on one camera.

Unfortunately, no. It's just a Cavision solution. Originally, I suggested adding another camera plate to the top of your existing one as a temporary fix.

On the Cavision, that'd add about 5/16", when what we really needed is over 3/8". So, in the end, they found some taller risers instead of shimming.

Perhaps you could find a way to shim your Redrock or contact them directly to do what Cavision did?

I like the zacuto setup alot. Does anyone know the cost? It's probably going to make me throw up, but I wanna know anyway......

As much as I like the cavision stuff, all those slotted holes worry me. It'd be much nicer with no adjustment.

Yeah, that riser of their's is sexy, but it too is slotted. Trying to be everything for everyone and all that.

I'm honestly more concerned about all these iris rods. The over-accessorization of cameras is a sickness. A fun sickness, but a sickness nonetheless.

Hi Jstunzi:

I spoke with Zacuto this morning, it is a lot more money than the Cavision solution. I am going to give the Cavision a try and if I am happy with it, great! If not, I have a Zacuto Z-Riser on hold.

Best,

Dan

Ah yes Dan... did you ask for a deal? In some cases people could probably just integrate the Z-Riser into their rig setup. Dan by now you know I'm the biggest Zacuto fanatic on this forum. The only thing I wish they had was carbon fibre male-female capable rails. One day one day.

The Zacuto Letus setup does not add four sets of rails. There are the short to longer rails on the Z-Riser and the main rails. The idea is customizability to your needs. Dan, let me know about the Cavision solution. How much is the price difference?

Aren't there three sets of rods in the link you sent? I don't know what the third set at the bottom is, but I count six rods. Add the swing-away set for your mattebox and you've got four.

Granted, I'm a product of the California public school system, so my counting might be off.

Also whomever is concerned with weight, Zacuto isn't about the lightest setup you can achieve. Their RED setup is about lighter weight and versatiliy indeed. Zacuto is about interia and the idea that proper balance can lead to amazing pans and what not. It's about taking whatever you want, batteries, monitors, follow focus, and the sort and being able to use it. No steadicam solution, but excellent stuff indeed.

The Z-Riser is excellent and I'm sure they will expand upon it in the future. I'm definitely going to purchase one for my flip module. I want to see the pricepoint on the Cavision rig. I can get the price on the Zacuto as well. The deal is, I would not feel comfortable using my camera riser above the lens. If you had anything you needed to mount to your camera (extra batteries, firestore, monitor) it would be more difficult than zacuto's solution. I'd much rather lift my lighter, shorter lens above my camera and all. I'll post a picture of my rig shortly so you can see exactly what I mean.

What's this about swing away and rails? A swing away does not add rails, it only enables the mattebox to move so you can easily put the lens on the camera/DOFA.

ARGH I want to see this Redrock mattebox. Brian won't update the site yet!

There are only two sets of rods. The Z-Grips in the handheld photos aren't necessarily rods. The short rods on the Z-Riser aren't truly a second set of rods rather than an extension of the main rod truss. See what I'm saying, it's not like you have layers of rods mounted on top of each other.

In terms of a swing-away, I don't see the second set of rods there, just a special hinge.

Anyway this stuff is all just numbers. The true matter is functionality and versatility. You must go with what works for you. What works for me? Zacuto's expandable gear. Steve at Zacuto helped me pick out what I needed. They also package everything superb. I've never been more happy with bubblewrap and shipping in my life. Another good example of their great support, I just switched from AB to IDX. I needed a new battery plate. I emailed them and they put one in the mail the same day. We took care of the money issues and everything worked out quick as speed gonzolas.
