How to open/import files larger than 2GB?

I need to import some .avi files that are bigger than 2G into FCP. The problem is, I can't even open most of the files that are that size (although a couple of 4GB files DO open -- don't know why).

Anyway, I know files this size are a problem, but does anyone know how to get large files like these to open in QuickTime or FCP? Or does anyone know hos you can split a file without opening it?

I think using AVIs, not the file size, is your problem. Try transcoding them into a comparable QT format. I regularly work w/muliti-gig sized files (DV, HDV, DVCPro HD, Uncompressed SD, etc.,) w/o a problem.

I used QT Pro to convert the smaller AVIs into QT MOVs and import them into Final Cut, but I can't open the ones over 2GB in QTPro at all.

How do you transcode your large files? What program or utility do you use?
