Need help re: Sachtler DV-8 Tripod (non SB model), for HVX 200

Hi,

I'm new to this forum and I was wondering if anyone out there could tell me the difference (if any) between the Sachtler DV-8 NON SB tripods and the newer SB tripods? The reason I ask is because I have an opportunity to purchase a used Sachtler DV-8 non SB in excellent condition for $2100.00. BTW is $2100.00 to much to pay-am I getting a good deal?

I will be using the DV-8 with my newly purchased HVX 200. At the moment I don't have any additional camera accessories, but in time I would like to add the Chrosziel Matte Box system, a 7" monitor and a SG Pro 35mm adapter. Will the DV-8 work with this set-up?

Thanks!

Rather than an a used DV-8, I would personally go with the FSB-6 head and whatever legs you can put with it (B&H has several options-- go carbon fiber if possible). The FSB-6 has a new mounting plate which lets you mount in a somewhat sideways motion, making it much eaiser than previous heads. It is a bit more advanced in its balancing. And you just have the assurance that it is new. While the Sachtlers can take a heavy beating, the head really is a precision piece of gear (that's why it costs so much). You don't want to discover that a used DV-8 needs service, which could be time consuming and costly. The FSB-6 should be able to hold that kind of weight.

Just my .02 . My January DV Magazine column will list (not necessariy review, but list) all of the tripods and heads in this range. From NAB this year, the favorite new head selected by our Videography and DV writers/editors was the FSB-6.

BTW, the new DV-8SB is going from $2450 and up at B&H. So, depeding upon the sticks, $2100 might be too much. OTOH, value is defined as what the item is worth to you.

just a thought from my experience...

I bought a used Sachtler DV-6 that was in "excellent" condition. It seemed to be fine when I got it, so I gave the guy good 'feedback' and went on my merry way. So, a couple months later both the drag wheels are almost impossible to turn and I'm thinking I may have to send it back to Sachtler to get it cleaned up.

Buying used is a crap shoot, even if the seller's intentions are legitimate- it's a crap shoot.

good luck to ya

Thanks Mike, I didn't think about the possibility of future problems down the line. Therefore, I've decide not to purchase the used Sachtler (I hope the guy understands). I'll just save up the rest of the money needed to purchase a new DV-8SB head with Miller sticks! This way at least it will be under warranty and I won't waste a large sum of money! Hey like they always say, "buy it right the first time!"

Again thanks!
