Footage from DVD to harddrive.

Hey all,

Lately, I've had a lot of clients that ask me to take footage from DVD's they have and use it to edit together for promos and stuff, and normally I would hook my camera up to my DVD player and record onto a miniDV tape and then transfer that to my harddrive, but I was wondering if there were any programs you guys use that can take the video file (full resolution) straight from DVD to your harddrive, without having to capture it twice in real time? I looked on the internet for a few, but I value the advice of you guys here more than google.

Any recommendations is greatly appreciated.

Much of the time, you can take the .VOB files from the Video_TS folder and change the extension to .mpg.

Generally I use mpeg streamclip on my mac. it's free and does a great job. There is a windows version, but i haven't used it.

After much searching and many failed attempts I finally found this program called Auto Gordian Knot. It's really a collection of different programs that together give you a very good rip to whatever file format you want. It takes a while but it's worth it.

I use Canopus Storm Bay to capture into Edius for everything. If I wish to grab some scenes from a DVD that I have made in the past, I play the DVD player streight into Storm Bay & capture in Edius. This is analogue however.
There is a program called VideoReDo, that is supposed to extract files off a DVD but I haven't used it.
