Capture Problems- No one seems to have answers anywhere

I'm having a problem I've read about only twice in months of combing numerous forums, and each thread never resulted in success or a solution.

in capturing footage the timers never run at a steady speed, instead stopping every few seconds, only to speed itself up before stopping again. The captured footage runs back in a similar fashion, playing back fine for a moment before glitching out. the audio is also out of sinc. I've done all that I can inside Vegas to fix this problem, and have tweaked my comps performance to also remedy this. the only causes, it seems, deals with PCI buses, and a myriad of other tech speak and parts of computers that I will never understand.

so my question is this- would capturing footage onto an external hardrive from another computer that runs programs smoothly, and then opening those files into vegas back onto my computer work? I know that sounds like something I could easily test on my own, but im kindof in an isolated world here in the south and want to make sure before i venture out to use people.

also, from the 24p tutorial that david posted, is it safe to assume that I could edit footage shot in 24p on, say, iMovie, then open it in Vegas for a touch up and export?

if anyone has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated.

are you using a dedicated hard drive to capture?

Is the capture hard drive almost full? or even 90% full?

Has the capture hard drive been de fragged?

Have you tried reinstalling vegas?

These would be the first steps I would take.

external drive, right out of the box, completely free. does it need to be defragged?

ive reinstalled vegas a couple of times.

the only steps Ive havent take are the ones involving moving around slots inside the machine, or buying other hardware to try to make my comp faster. im trying to pinch pennies here, which is why im seeking an alternate method in getting my footage into the program, outside of straight capture.

all i know is that ive captured footage to the drive exclusively, retrieved it, and it glitched. i tried capturing it to the internal drive, and was met with the same kind of glitches.

other than that, i couldnt tell you if it was properly formatted or not, but it seemed to work like it should.

- Clean the heads on the cam before trying to capture.
- Try capturing to another NLE. Try using another cam/deck to capture.

iMovie has no ability to edit with a 24p timeline or export with 24p flags, so no. Not as 24p, anyway.

Try to check if the external drive is set at FAT32 vs NTFS. Fat 32 is limited in handling heavy footage at one time.

As Smithy says, check to see if the drive is set at FAT32. That is the way new hard drives appear to be formatted. My external drive did the same thing until I reformatted it to NTFS.

ah, that may be my problem. im running boot camp on my mac, so i have vegas runnning on my Windows partition. (which may be the problem as well)

i'll try formatting my drive to ntfs though and let you all know if it works.

its definately not a formatting issue, it was already NTFS.

i guess ill just chunk my computer into the sea and start over.
