Brevis Flip / XHA1 Teasers (Frame Grabs)

Some grabs (and footage to follow) from tonight's work with the XHA1 and Brevis flip. These are straight from the camera, no CC or post processing other than the 1280x720 resize and jpg compression. The XH-A1 was set to a tweaked Panasonic match preset and locked at -3db gain. Lenses used were all Canon FD: 35mm f2, 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.8, 135mm f2.8

Wow. You can really see some great edge to edge sharpness in those grabs, which is something I was really interested to see, and this initial impression is very good on that.

Since I know you are also a fan of the slr frame size, I would assume you are getting this edge to edge sharpness with an SLR frame size? If so (whether one uses that large of a frame size or not), that's real good to know that we will have a clean viewing area that is that large to start from.

Thanks for sharing.

P, the HV20 performs pretty much the same as the XH-A1, and to be honest, with the A1's CA issues gone on the flip, I"m loving the extra stop or so that the bigger lens/CCD offers.

Jason, maintaining or exceeding the SLR/cine field of view is something very important in our R&D program. In fact, anything forcing users to zoom in to clear vignetting is considered a failure here. The frame grabs posted above used a 16:9 frame a full 10% wider than the 36mm standard! Rather than losing field of view (so your 28mm really performs like a 26mm if you want it to) the entire optics kit is designed to push the envelope of conventional lens performance.

It's a lot cheaper to just tell folks to zoom in...but that's throwing away the field of view you invested in with your 35mm lenses! It's why we only use 72mm achromats, and why our optical flip array is designed to invert a much larger image than required. It's all done to make sure our users can enjoy "Vistavision" frame widths, with edge sharpness like you see in the grabs. Those using our PL or OCT19 mounts are required to frame of course to the academy type (smaller) frame, but some of these lenses are rather surprising with respect to the image cone size...so assume nothing.

I should have some new footage tomorrow if the weather holds up with the new GG and a 70-210 2.8 - 4.0 zoom

Well Dennis this sh#t blows my mind. You guys have managed to pull off some amazing optical achievements it sounds like.

I'll admit, we're even a bit surprised ourselves with how well the system is performing.

I've edited the first post to include links now to the footage :-) More footage is coming shortly.
