24p footage comes in interlaced

I've done a lot of searching on the forum and with Google, but I can't seem to fix this problem. I shot on my DVX100a in 24p (not advanced) using the squeeze mode.

I read that you need to capture using 29.97 so I'm doing that.

The problem is, playback on my PC about 1/3 or 1/4 of the frames are interlaced. This is a lot more noticeable on quicker pans or movements. My friend told me that that is pretty normal on a PC and that it's best to shoot 24Pa if you plan on outputting to the web or a computer.

My question is, how can I get these interlacing issues to go away. Is there a plugin or something I set when I compress to a smaller file to get rid of the interlacing problems?

I searched long and hard in the forum but couldn't figure out my problem.

thanks in advance!

Well until you remove the pulldown there will be interlaced frames- what editing system are you on. This forum is for Final Cut Pro on the Mac.

I'm on Final Cut Pro, sorry...forgot to mention that. So what can I do to remove the pulldown? Thanks Noah!

Once you've captured your 24p normal footage at 29.97fps, you can remove the pulldown with a reverse telecine in Cinema Tools (the batch mode is handy). In the future, if you plan on editing on a 24p timeline, you might as well shoot 24p advanced and then capture it with advanced pulldown removal (saves a step). You can always add pulldown back in if you need to, like if you were going to export back out to MiniDV tape.

The pulldown cannot be removed in FCE- you treat as DV NTSC and cut at 29.97. Look is identical you just can't go to film or 24p native DVD.

NoahK, can you PLEASE explain this for me, a 24p noobie, clearly once and for all.
Right now I'm Exporting 24p out of FCE using QT Conversion. No Compressor in FCE even though Lynda.com's tutorial says it has. So, I deinterlace for computers and don't when exporting for DVD. BUT, I've always thought that 24p is progressive so why am I deinterlacing???? Without deinterlacing my 24p looks like crap. I cannot find a clear answer for this. I just need a brief export route out of FCE for the web.

Thank you.

Well in FCE you don't have true 24p you have 24p + a 3:2 interlaced pulldown so deinterlacing for the web is about all you can do. Also when you export at 24fps you are throwing away frames at random- most of which you'll need for smooth motion. I'd stick with 30 fps download. Or move up to FCP where you can actually cut at 24fps without the need for a deinterlace step.;

Are you saying my export settings should be 29.97 not 24 fps? Still not clear on that one even though i know I'm on a 29.97 timeline. Also, when you say "I'd stick with 30 fps download." do you mean do all my taping at 30fps and leave 24p alone until I get FCP (which I will)?
Thanks for taking the time man! I'm pulling out my hair. I just switched to a Mac and it's taking all my willpower to not just go easily running back to Vegas on my pc.
The only reason I don't is because I know a Mac is the place to be if you're serious and my pc is badly in need of a overhaul.
