Mac corrupting P2 clips (from 16gb cards)

I have been shooting some long clips and when i import (FCP) the clips it seems to get corrupt. The picture goes black after a certain amount of time and when i look at the QT in the finder and try to open, qt says File not a movie file. This seems to only happen when i use my 16 gb cards (never happened for a year with my 4gb cards). It happens a lot when the clips span but not always.

I know there is nothing wrong with the files because i can see it and play it in the p2 log and transfer window and when i retry bringing in the clips as shorter clips using in and out points, and it works fine, but this causes a real head ache.

any ideas why this happens?

'cause you're using FCP on a Mac, and the FCP importer occasionally bugs out.

Your footage is fine, it's always fine, all these problems are always caused by FCP.

A few things you can do -- first, try updating to the latest version of FCP if you're not already on 6.0.1. Second, download the demo of P2 Log Pro and see if it successfully converts the clips.

Third, ditch the whole stupid FCP P2 import window and just get Raylight. You'll solve every FCP-induced bug that exists, and you'll get instant access to your clips without having to ever import them again, and without having to take up twice the hard disk space.

Have you switched on the record prevention tab on the P2 cards? Folks from Panasonic have recommended this to me. Also make sure you're running the latest updates of OS X and FCP.

Can you tell that Barry doesn't like FCP?

But I agree with Raylight...that does allow instant access to the MXF files. DUPLICATE THEM FIRST. Do not edit the masters...back them up in case a drive fails. And it happens more than you think.

I don't mind FCP at all. I just don't like the stupid, indefensible way that they punish so many users, all for the sake of some internal political decision to not support MXF on the timeline, so they make everyone deal with that pathetic import/transfer process. No other editor on the market makes you do anything like that, so why should FCP?

I do apologize, perhaps my tone is being affected, but I really feel like the doctor and the 10,000th patient has come in and said "doctor, it hurts when I do this." I want to shout "then don't do that!" How many times have we seen P2 workflow complaints that are directly traceable to that idiotic import/convert process? (hint: nearly EVERY ONE. Go to DVInfo, the Cow, here, anywhere -- almost every time you see a complaint about P2 workflow, it almost invariably traces back to Log & Transfer.) And the infuriating thing is: Apple has the technology, they could make the whole problem just go away, but they refuse to.

So I tell everyone, just use Raylight and all the problems with the Mac just go away. We recently bought a Mac and will be using FCS2 on it, but not without raylight!

I've had the same problem on a 4 giger, not all the clips but a couple, what a bummer you have to spend more money on top of FCP to get peace of mind.
I'm running FCP 5.1.2 on a quad core mac.
