...I could use some advice.

I will be graduating this December with a degree in Business (specializing in Finance), getting a real job, and getting married (all in the same month!)

For those of you who went the traditional college route (or didn't, but ended up with corporate 9-5 jobs), how did you manage to get a job that doesn't suck the life out of you and still have the creative energy to pursue filmmaking? I'm also curious to hear from those who have families (spouse plus kids): how do you balance it all? When you're shooting a feature do the long hours and late nights affect your relationships?

I haven't landed a job yet, but I am currently going to interviews and hoping something that pays good enough comes my way. I'd like to hear stories of how people have balanced the work/film relationship.

If your degree is in finance, I'd say use what you know to make as much money as quickly as you can. As long as you resist the temptation to *keep* making ungodly amounts of cash as a trader or hedge fund manager/partner, you can retire at 30 and get on with the fun things in life. I wish someone would've told me to go into finance instead of getting a marketing degree that I don't use.

But if you're not the trader sort, dive as much into film right away as possible. Otherwise, you really won't have much time for it if you have a "normal" job and are married. Because you really need to make the marriage work. It's waaaaaay more important and rewarding than any piece of celluloid, miniDV or P2. :) Good luck!

My mistake : /

I have no advice other than to say; being dedicated to your family (Wife and/or child) and a career (Whether you are dedicated to that or not you still gotta provide for the family) will leave you very restricted

What about things like staying fit ? Having a socail life ? Relaxing ? Leisure acitvity ?

To this day, it has been my crutch and I still cannot find a way to juggle it all.

I am the masta blasta father though. Very dedicated to my son. When you figure it out, let me know. :( :crybaby:  :zombie_smiley:

i live in the magical world of the unemployed. i've found that having a regular job isn't good for my sanity. what i'm banking on is a big paycheck when i'm able to finish my comedy.

Jason gave you the best advice so far... I'm trying to learn everything I can about hedging right now... I think it's the answer if you're smart enough... and I don't know that I am, but I'm gonna' find out.

The only way to live your passion is to get a job in that field, or else make enough money in the minority of your time, so that you can use the majority to chase your passion.
