Yamaha ND-10 for music

I have a brother in law who is a musician. He composed performed and recorded the score for a short I just finished and he is finally taking his passion seriously.

He currently owns Event TR-5 monitors which I understand are a bargain for dialogue and other film editing and are considered "decent" by many of you experienced audio pros. They are all I can afford right now and I need to get into something other than my Klipsch 5.1 Promedia consumer computer speakers so I am going to purchase these from him for $200 + shipping.

However he needs to score a pair of better monitors before that happens so he asked me to ask my oracle (you guys) about his situation. Hehehe...

He had heard all the hype about the NS-10 Yamahas and he has been considering them for quite some time now. I know close to nothing about them. I did however find lots of articles explaining how they are uber popular in recording studios. I was also told that they are a good representation of the average speaker in consumer's homes.

He has a small to medium size room... he has Pro-Tools and lots of instruments... wish I could tell you about the room a bit more but they moved to the West coast in FL since I moved to LA and I haven't seen their new home yet.

Also, I went on Ebay and found that you can get them for much less than their $1000 retail... $500-650 seems to be the average.

So my questions:
a. Are there different models? Which one for him? Please explain.
b. Are they still the "best" buy for his line of work?
c. Are there contenders?
d. Is there anything else that should be considered for a $800 budget?

I hope some of you have the time to give me some feedback, and thanks in advance!!!

NS-10's are crappy speakers. There I said it. That is part of the reason they were very popular in studios, not to mix on but to check the mix on a home stereo simulation system. They are bright and will wear your ears out fast.
That said there are folks that love them. I don't know any but I've seen the love rants.
If he is doing primarily radio pop and jingles then they might be an OK choice. Event 20/20's are much better speakers and cost about 1/2 the price. I really like Yorkville YSM-1's. Meyer HD-1's are great if you have a big room and $5,000 to spend. He can find out a bunch of opinions on the Digidesign Users Conference, both for music and post. Genelec's are always popular. Also Digi is selling (M-Audio) a new speaker that has gotten some really good comments, but I have no personal experience.

And yes folks are probably tired of discussing it ;~)
