In any case, whatever the "dream" is supposed to be, "requiem" is not used as a synonym for "death," but rather in its correct denotation.
Cut the rhetoric, there is no physical death by any character. If a requiem is to take place, there must be a death, what dies? Their dreams!
Were their dreams any different from the principles of the American Dream? Nope. Originally people were questioning if the directors had any idea what a requiem actually is. Of course they did. As I posted before it got deleted, cut the rhetoric.
This is the biggest problem I see with interpreting an artist's work. Particularly, if said artist has stated his/her own interpretation. We are always trying to read into something, that which does not belong. "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar"While Selby Jr. may not have meant the American Dream specifically, once you publish something, it is up for many more interpretations than you actually meant, some making even more sense.
