when you'd wish for a better wireless

Wow that's spooky! I wonder if they ever sell any of those? I've probably got 4 of them still in the sealed bag! Considering you can get a Countryman EMW for around $170 somebody would have to be a moron to buy an ME-2... at almost any price. It's an okay lav... but put it up against one of the commonly used lavs and it will take you all of 2 seconds to decide which one you want to use.

For the record they DO sell the components separately! But it's a total HOSING if you ever buy like that.

G2 100s or 500s?

G2 100s or 500s?

Having been an owner of two Lectrosonics UM100/UCR100 systems I feel I can provide valid feedback related to those systems that I owned.

They are built like nails. Or, out of nails.. I'm not sure. Military grade stuff. They're heavy.. and, they have the most insanely archaic way of changing frequencies: with a tweek screwdriver. They aren't very user friendly and they consume 9-volt batteries like it ain't no thang. The sound is just okay on the 100's. Really good on the 200's (yes, there is a big notable difference with a tracking front end receiver) and out of the world sound quality on the 400's.

I had the opportunity to work on a CMT Network show that is actually debuting next Monday night--it's called Popularity Contest. The show employed ten sound guys and we all provided our own gear--most of the guys were using 201, 205, or 210. One guy had the other 185-series VHF stuff and two guys (me and another) used the 100's. A couple of people (surprisingly) had G2 Sennheisers with them either as backups or just additional radios since they are soooo affordable.

We never had the chance to try to same mic using a G2, a 100, and a 200 for comparison but in using the 100 and the G2 side by side with the similar mic's, I honestly, for what it's worth, thought they sounded the same with the same range. I liked the user-friendliness of the G2 a little better as well since the controls were beneath a door and were on a digital-lcd screen instead of requiring a screwdriver and being inconveniently located. The G2's also ran on cheap AA batteries and last a good while.

So, considering I sold my Lectro's a month ago and still have three lav mic's, I am actually in the market for something else. Right now I would either spring for the Digital Hybrid 400-series stuff -or- the Sennheiser G2 and probably not anything in the middle--I think the G2 would be just fine for practically any situation I would come across.

Hope this helps. . . and check out my show next week on CMT, will ya!?

Hi All,
Sennheiser makes two different versions of the G2 system. The 100 version is very inexpensive (under $500) and the 500 version has a transmitter only for under $500 and I see on their home page that there is an ENG receiver to match but I don't know how much it is. I assume everyone is talking about the 100 series when comparing them to the Lectro UCR100. Is anyone familiar with the 500 series units and how they perform? Might be an alternative to consider between price points. i've used the 500s in a studio situation with DPA mics and rack mounted receivers and they seem fine. Long battery life and decent sound. Of course having DPAs on them doesn't hurt.
Regards,
Bernie

I stand corrected, but like you said, at B&H, where it's $344 + $215 ($559) for the transceiver pair vs $500 for both *including* the $123 mic, anyone buying the transceivers separately should probably be involuntarily institutionalized.

Which brings us back to eBay : )

Hey not to mention the other stuff that you get thrown in! You ALSO get the sk100 plug-on... the needed cables... and a sometimes useful shoe-mount! ALL THAT in the EW100ENGG2 kit... which can be had for about that same price.

ALSO... I had the 500 series... no improvement over the 100... just extra stuff like EQ settings and stuff that don't affect performance.

I agonized over it a bit, but opted for the set without the plug-on. Of course, it's a WAY better deal to buy it with the set, $100 extra vs $228 later (seeing a pattern here yet, kids?), but I couldn't imagine any scenarios where I'd need a handheld, dynamic-only wireless mic. I do mainly narrative film-style work.

Interesting to know that the 500 series doesn't really add anything especially useful. Makes the 100 series a pretty darn nice solution aside from the need to replace the mics. Once I get the Countryman B3s and (hopefully) like them just fine, I'll put the G2 mics on eBay as a pair and see what I can get for them. I'll report back when I do.

I thought the Sennheiser 500 Series added phantom power? No? Also: How can you use a Sanken cos-11 on a Sennheiser G2 100 transmitter since it requieres phantom power?

A little confusion here. The sk500 transmitter supplies phantom... the 100 does not. This is the plug-on transmitter... sometimes called the butt plug.

I detailed all the differences in the 100 and 500 at great length some time back... look it up if you want, I'm not rehashing it again. The phantom from the plug-on is BY FAR the most significant of those differences! You would be best off to get a 100 kit with the 500 plug-on if that's what you want.

I was simply addressing the performance differences... and there aren't any. You won't get more range or have fewer drop-outs... and you won't hear any difference in SN or anything else (aside from EQ or other fluff features).

Let's say you could have a couple EQ features added to your car stereo... like say a particular model of Alpine or something... and maybe TWICE as many pre-set channels. Would that be worth paying DOUBLE the price? I say no... if somebody is going to get a sennheiser 500 system they are FULLY in the range of a Lectro 100 with 100mw transmitters... or a used 195d system... and THOSE are measurably better performing.

So all I'm saying is aside from the phantom in the 500 plug-on... there's no performance gains over the 100... just fluff and an inflated price tag.

Okay, I see. I read somewhere that the G2 100 doesn't have phantom power but that's the plug-on only than. Thanks for clearing that up.
