Premiere runs SLOW in my comp

It takes a good minute for me to load a project (10 minute short with tons of footage). It also takes 10-20 seconds for Premiere to unfreeze when I switch to another open program such as my browser.

I have a 3ghz processor, 1 GB RAM, 256mb video ram, and 10 GB left of hard drive space. Most of the avi files used in my project are on an EXTERNAL hard drive, where I have 200+ GB of disk space.

Is the reason the program is so slow because of the external hard drive? Are there any general tips for optimizing computer performance for video editing?

Thanks.

This could be due to lots of things.

You dont have much RAM (2gb is better)
External Drives and conection could be an issue. (F/W, USB, ?)
Having other programs open is a big NO NO NO...
Having screen savers, anti virus apps etc running ...big NO NO also

You have very little free HD space ! 10GB !!!!

Scratch disk space alloocation set up is important.

Are your HDs regularly de fragged?

I recently upgraded my memory from 512MB to 3.5GB and that has made a noticeable difference with how the program runs and the rendering times. Before I had much the same problem, it would freeze the computer all the time, even if I attempted to open My Computer while it was running. Upgrading your memory might not solve all your problems, but it's taken away a lot of headaches for me.

I want to free up space on my internal HD by moving files to my external HD. How can I do this without completely screwing up my project files, which refer to avi files on my internal hard drive?

I'd hate to have to replace every file individually.

Are these files on the same drive as the Program . Thats a problem right there.

Anyway.

Move them to a common ( the same) Media folder on the ext drive.

When Premiere cant find them when you load the project it will ask where they are. Browse to the new media folder and voila. Save your project once you have them on line again.

Thanks for the tip.

To answer your question--no, the files are not on the same drive as the program. I'm planning on buying a second internal hard drive. Would I have to reinstall the program on the second hard drive if that's where I want to store my files?

Sounds like you have one internal drive on your comp and one external drive.

If thats the case, the media files would be on the same drive as the Premiere program and thats not where you want them.

C: Drive - System and Program Files eg Premiere (ONLY)
D: Drive - Media Files
E : Drive - Scratch Files and optional Audio

The 10 gigs of free space is the problem. Having such a small amount of space for a scratch disk will slow your entire system down even without premiere.
