Used 2 DPs, embarrassed to post this. If anyone can assist, and give me the settings in Edius, I would appreciate it.

This is the one needing correction, notice no purple on wall.

If it is just a simple white balance correction, add the Whitebalance filter to the clip, open up the WB filter dialog, leave it on AUTO, and the click on something white in the scene -- maybe the label on the bottle.

If that's not quite the right shade (it will probably feel too cold given the incandescent lighting in the room), you can try clicking on other parts of the scene, or manipulate the color wheel at the top of the dialog to change the hue.

If you are trying to correct individual colors, that's doable as well -- I posted a brief tutorial before, you should be able to find the thread. If you strike out, let me know, and I'll dig it up.

THoff,

I think they didn't turn on the purple light. Ill work with the white balance. if anyone wants to try, I can give assistant editor credit on IMDB right now. I need to make the final transfer to tape soon.

thanks

I'm not real sure if it would work as I've never tried, but you could maybe create a new light in after effects, tint it the appropriate color and try to mess around with its position, saturation, etc.

if there is anyway to do this all in Canopus and give me the settings. I can load them in and export.

thanks for the help

I've put together a simple 21 minute video on how to perform white balance and color correction in Edius. It covers things that the Canopus / Grass Valley video doesn't show. Take a look at the video below, and if you still have questions, feel free to ask.

Thoff. It's about time you did up a tutorial video :) I've been hoping you would for some time now. I'm going to add this to the tutorials sticky.

Thanks,
Jason

Hey Thoff,

Great tutorial. Many Many Thanks. Its so nice that you have taken the time to put this together for free. :)

I for one really appreciate it.

I was kind of familiar with this already, but wanted to ask you why there is no brightness controll on the white balance control. (or is there)
For example, if the sky was dark in your tutorial and not only did you want to amp the saturation, but also to make it lighter or darker, how would you have done that?

Thanks,

Luis

ps: I wish Canopus or now GV would give the same range options to the curves effect. (so that you could pic a range of color, luminance, etc.. that the curves would affect) And also wish they would work in 32 bit color. Once you have some footage that needs alot of color correcting, it just starts to fall apart fast.

You can use the Contrast slider to adjust the brightness of the sky.

Another way you can do it is by applying a Chrominance filter to the clip. The Chrominance filter allows you to apply filters to the inside, edge, and outside of the key, so if you want to adjust the sky's brightness, you could apply Chominance, key the sky, and then apply the Brightness filter to the inside of the key.

I didn't do a tutorial like this earlier because I don't particularly like the tone of my voice.

Hi THoff - you suprise me over and over again. Thanks for this great tutorial. There is a German EDIUS Pro 4 tutorial DVD available covering more than 130 topics including color correction (8 hours in total). This DVD is not bad at all but your 21 minutes video on white balancing and color correction is by far more intuitive and practical. Best regards from old Europe.

Hey Thoff,
Thanks so much again.

But the contrast slider doesn't control the brightness. (or am I wrong here?)

As far as the chrominance, I'm having difficulty with it.
Why not have it select the color the same whay the White balance selects the range.

The way the chrominance selects color is totally different. if I use the eye dropper, it doesn't affect the square, elipse, etc.. selectors. In you tutorial you could click on someone's face hold the control and add more color points to add to the selection.

I could not do that with chrominance. and if I selected a color then went to try to change the color range by going to the square selector, it defaulted to the previous square selection. not the currently set up by the eyedropper.

Its just frustrating. grrr. (workable, but frustrating. Also wish it had undos within the effects. so if I change something, like the change, then change it some more, but didn't like the 2nd change, I could do undo and go back to the first change while still under the effects control window.)

ps: your voice is fine. we all think our voices sound awful.

Sorry for not responding sooner, I was gone from the computer for a few days.

No, the contrast does NOT control brightness per se, but in this particular case (and many others), it does in effect do the same thing. If you change the contrast, the midtones will move.

You get far more control over the brightness by using the Chrominance filter and then applying the Color Balance filter. The way you select the color that the Chrominance filter is to be applied to is different from how the White Balance filter works, but keep in mind that it doesn't really need to have all the input parameters (the limiters) that the latter filter does.

And I'm still unhappy with my voice -- I cringe every time I hear it. My native tongue is German, and of course I'm also self-conscious about the accent. Last but not least, I make the mistake any inexperienced presenter makes -- I kept saying things like "uh" and "ah". Argh!

THoff, I am sure every Edius user appreciates the effort you put into this, a million thanks. I am still using V2.5 but learnt more from your video than ??? years of sweating over the program.
