Reposting in Audio: Help with Lav Specs

Hello Everyone,

this is my first post and was hoping to get some feedback. I am in dire need of a lav mic and have narrowed it down to a Countryman EMW.

However, I need to decide on the High Frequency Response (Flat, Shelved, or Peaked)

I am hoping to get feedback on what is most commonly used or best option, given I wll only be able to afford one.

My understanding is that flat is helps to weed out air conditioner and engines and the such.

Peaked is for Lavs under clothes and Shelved is for lavs over clothes.

is my understanding correct?

If so, I was thinking that peaked might be best (for the cleaner look).

My conditions are uknown as I will be doing a video ethnography and interviewing people I don't know and places I am unfamiliar with. If I had to guess, though, I would say in churches, community rooms, hotels, apartments, and some exteriors.

Also I am going hard wired. This is because I heard wired is always better and well, really for budgetary reasons too. Can't afford a wireless system.

BUT, the place that I am ordering from wants to know, "Which wireless system do you need the mic terminated for?"

I already let them know that I wanted it for XLR, direct connection into camera. Is it possible to have it wired for both or is there a misunderstanding.

Any feedback I can get on what to order would be greatly appreciated.

thnx

p.s. oh omni is best for the type of work i will be doing, or no?

I think you are correct on all counts:

- wired is best as far as quality is concerned
- omni has the best frequency shape regardles where it is pointing, and no proximity effect
- Countryman EMW is a good lavalier

About the shelved/peaked. Will you be always be able to hide the lav in the clothing? In fast situations lav is often just clipped on somewhere without much regard to is showing. In those situations shelved would work better. On the other hand it is always easier and safer to lower high frequency levels in post if needed than to push them up (using peaked in the open versus shelved hidden).

Some lavs/miniatures like DPA 406x series have removable end caps for essentially the same shelved/peaked effect making it possible to tailor the frequency response to placement. They also have a standard mini-dot connector with wide selection of exhancable connectors for XLR and almost every imaginable transmitter. With that system you just need XLR attachment now, get the connector for the future transmitter later without rewireing. Maybe you have already considered all this, and I do not know what the price difference is.

pick the shelved if you intend to hid it or flat if you dont
the difference between the picked ands shelves that picked intend to give much more high fq boost under heavy clothes l- probably not for you .flat would work as well for under the shirt or over it

what wireless - at this point you dont need any brake point connector and if you will buy one its about 25 usd to fix the brake out near the power supply .

by the way petrus for the price of the dpa he can get the countryman with g-2 :-)

OK Oleg, DPA is out of the question pricevise.

(just got a matched pair of 4060:s with XLR & G2 connectors, and like them a lot. Have no idea about US prices, DPAs were about the same as COS11:s here in Finland )

dpa are about twice here and in the states
the emw with g-2 could be found for less then 600usd ( 30 more with interconnectors)
the dpa with phantom suply in states about 400++ +another 70 for stupid microdot to mini jack
