Issue capturing 24pA footage in FCP - What happens if you dont use A.Pull Down?

I have been having issues capturing my 24pA footage in FCP but I got it to work by not using advance pull down removal. The footage looks fine but who knows. The error i would get is problem removing the pulldown... The footage was shot on the DVX 100 but I had to capture using a crappy $200 DV camera (Firewire port in teh DVX has gone byebye)

Thoughts?

Don't use Pulldown removal when capturing. Capture at 29.97 and remove the pulldown in Cinema Tools or somthing else.

I can't remember where the tutorial is on how to do it in Cinema Tools.

Was it Nattress who wrote that??

Some one'll chime in with a link...

Cinema Tools does a great job of removing the 24PA pulldown. Load the clip into Cinema Tools and if the pulldown hasn't been removed, Cinema Tools will ask if you want to do a reverse telecine (pulldown removal). It'll give you the option to overwrite your current file or create a new one.

Yeah... but don't you have to start it from the exact right frame in order for CT to remove the correct frames?

Not if it's 24PA. It gets it right everytime. If it's not 24PA then it gets more complicated.

I generally record directly to an external hard drive using DV Monitor Pro. After that, I just open the clips in Cinema Tools and do a reverse telecine and I'm good to go.

Hmm interesting. So some of this footage doe have pulldown removal.... If I just load everything into CT i assume it will know what is what.

Its a bad idea to have mixed removal + non removal footage though, right?

Wait... the footage that I did capture with advance pull down removal in FCP is going to be crap now, right? I have to redigitize that without the removal? Crap.

Well it's going to be 23.98 that's not a big deal- read the FAQs in the forum for more info on what's what.
