NEW 1024x768 HD Monitor

SDI option is necessary for use on HPX and other 2/3" cameras. Panasonic charges over $600 for optional SDI board for BLHT 80 monitor, not to mention another $50 to install the board.

Majormorgan,

V-mount batteries are great. if you are in an expensive shoot, chances are there will be tons of v-mount batteries laying around.

But if you get 3 tekkeon batteries, you can keep swapping them out for unlimited battery. So I think I'll provide any battery mount people request, but I'll price it accordingly.

As for the battery mount I'm making, it will be around $67 I think that's what I priced them at. Again these are introductory prices. I'm trying to build my name a little and once I get enough reviews, I'll probably bump up the price so I can make a little money. I know sometimes the prices seem high, but when you consider research time, packaging time, documentation, prototyping, etc... then you begin to understand.

Hey Ned,

I feel the same way about those tekkeon. I was just in a shoot tonight with Mark Johnson and they had the marshall with the 4pin xlr and some huge battery belt. needless to say the battery belt died on the set and they had to plug to the wall. If they had the tekkeon they could just have changed batteries and had another 3-4hrs.

Also you can ask Kholi what he thought of my 8.4" monitor I brought it on set, and though Mark didn't use it for his shoot. Kholi, Brian (Gagefx), Matty_G, and I think even Mark saw us set it up on Brian's Jib.

I still haven't ordered the tekkeon mount to the rails. I'm holding off, just to see if I come up with something better. Problem is, anything out of metal will cost a lot more. The way I have them, you can slide the batteries with your hands but if you don't then they hold pretty well because the rubber doesn't let the plastic slide out by itself.

Hi MonkeyKing,

Yes I know that Panasonic charges $600 for the HD-SDI option. Again these are introductory prices. and I almost make no extra money if you get the HD-SDI option. (and I have more labor and more liability)

These prices will most likely go up after some time. Again what I keep hearing from people in other industries is that at a bare minimum, you double your cost to cover all your expenses. I'm not even close to that.

I guess I'm not the best business person, but I'm just like you guys. And that's why I like that I may be able to provide a great product at a great price. Lets face it. if the studios want a 8.4" monitor, they can afford the Panasonic. but for indie film makers the Panasonic is out of reach. (that's where I come in)

Luis, I am thinking of the battery solution for the monitor. One possible approach can be a bracket that has 2 Panasonic battery mounts on it. In order for it to work both batteries need to be plugged in. There are a few benefits to this solution.
1. Using the same batteries as the camera.
2. The weight of 2 Panasonics is the same as one Tekkeon 3400
3. 2 5400mah DVXuser or similar capacity batteries would power the monitor for about 50% longer than the Tekkeon 3400. I do not know your monitor power consumption, but comparing the Panasonics and Tekkeon, the 2 Panasonics stringed together are about 50% more capacity.

The only drawback I can think of is the user needs to make sure that both batteries are fully charged before plugging them in, otherwise the lower charged one would limit the run time.

Adolgin,
Thats a possibility, but then you are talking about 2 panasonic battery mounts. So just for those two mounts it would be $135x2 = $270 + tax. That's not including me figuring out how to connect the two mounts, and then installing it into the back of mine.
I don't think people are willing to pay an extra $300 to use the panasonic batteries. but I could be wrong.

Alex certainly knows power, so any solution he poses would be technologically sound.

What I'm thinking is that the Tekkeon could be secured in a cradle with velcro strap through a belt-buckle type thing (there has to be a technical term for it but trying to type, think and people watch in LaGuardia simultaneously).

You can buy a case of Tekkeon's for the price of one of those old battery belts!

Luis, I think you misunderstood my question. I did not mean to discuss the business side of this, just usability, to see if the idea of using Panasonic style batteries has merits. I am not sure where the dollar figures are coming from that you mention. You probably mean some product that is already on the market?
If we to design the 2 battery power source as I described, we would be able to offer it for under $100 for the whole adapter.

Hey all,

I got to see this monitor last night. Not exactly in complete action, but up and running in conjunction with my own M2+HVX setup and have nothing but positive thoughts about it. In short: it's amazing.

You can see the screen from every angle, it's more than adequate enough for focus pulling at those angles. The monitor is just amazing. Luis' time spent putting work into it has paid off and he's tweaking the box even more at this point.

Once the battery mount solution is available, I'm thinking this could/will be a very viable alternative to the Marshall.

Great job on this monitor, Luis. Really impressive.

Hi Alex,
First off, I just want to say, that although I may seem negative, I'm not trying to be. I really appreciate your input and I'm trying to satisfy as many people's concerns as I can. After all, its only in my best interest. That being said:

Here is where I got my number. http://www.nebtek.com/proddetail.php?prod=LIBA

its $135 for the adapter. and if you check out the Nebtek website, you can see that they are increasing the price of the marshall by $210 to have it configured with this adapter. Meaning you are paying the $135 for the adapter and $75 for the modification.

The good thing about it is that its supposed to convert the 7.4v to 12 volts. so as long as you don't need more than 1.2amps you should be ok. Again, this might not be the brightest but workable. (i'll see what the LCD draws)

As far as producing something like this, you are talking about plastic pieces that need to be molded. The initial costs to create the molds are enormous. its only when you get 1000 + pieces that you start bringing the price down. this doesn't include the metal tabs for the battery and the circuitry to go from 7.2 volts to 12v and if I were making it, I would also have some sort of fuse to protect the LCD.

So I don't think I'll be designing/producing a piece like this. I think I would just buy the $135 piece from nebtek and charge my costumers $210 just like they do for that attachment.

As for the anton bauer mount, I'd do the same buy this one.
http://www.nebtek.com/proddetail.php?prod=AB_Gold-Mount
and tack on a $75 fee to mount it to the board.

Ned,

I'm working on having my railmount for the Tekkeon work in conjunction with this setup. I think I almost figured something out. I'll let you know.

I'm also working on providing a safety screen in front of the monitor. something that could be swapped out. so you cannot scratch the monitor. Instead you would be scratching the replaceable safety screen. (this would be an add on.)

Might also work on a hood for it. I didn't like the Hoodman I saw for the Marshall. Kept falling off.

And finally I think I will mark the front of the screen with lines that will help you block off the safety areas of the screen, as well as frame a 16x9 when you are in 4:3, etc.... (Hope this made sense.)

Kholi,
Thanks for the compliment and I'm glad you liked it. When we were going back an forth about monitors and I was telling you how nice this screen is, its hard to explain how awesome the viewing angles are and how crisp it looks. I think people just need to see it to believe it. I'm sure the Panasonic $4800 monitor is just as nice with all the other great features.

Hi Siniarch

Congratulations on your Monitor. That is one cool piece of equipment you build there!
For Panasonic Battery Adapters, look here! 4.99$ each!
I bought them for a little LED-Light project of mine, they do the job.

Peter

Peter,

This is a great find. $4.99. wow now we are talking. My only heistation is quality. Having batteries mounted on the back of an on-board LCD, you really want them to hold on to dear life. I mean this setup could go shoulder mounted, or on a stabilizer system. I am talking with adolgin about him providing me a solution.

But at $4.99 I think I'll have to check these out as well.

Thank you,

Luis

Ok Guys,

Sorry to keep posting and all, but I was just outside around 3:45pm in LA and took the monitor out for a spin, and I have to say WOW. I was able to see the image and focus while the sun was hitting it straight on.

Now, when the sun hit the screen, if I tilted the screen to reflect the sun into my face, then I couldn't see the image well. but if I tilted the screen so the sun was reflecting on to my chest or anywhere away from the face, and wow. it was pretty nice.

I really wasn't expecting it to work so well under the sun. I really have to get some people to look at this in person to appreciate it.

And actually, I'm looking for someone in LA that has a camera with HD-SDI output for me to test that connection. I haven't tested that input yet, because I don't have anything that outputs HD-SDI. If you have something of this sort, please PM me.

Thanks.

Hey Pratrick,

I really haven't seen Bruce's turned on. He actually color corrected our spot for the Heinz contest, so I've seen it. His is a 10" screen.

We are offering different products, so maybe looking at the specs of each will help you make your decision.

I have nothing but good things to say about Bruce, so comparing the two LCDs puts me at an awkward position.

If you are in LA maybe we could put them up next to one another, but you'd have to take that up with him also.

I understand Patrick.

I wish I had more information for you. Maybe describing what you will be using it for might help.

You can also pm Bruce and give him a chance to tell you why you should get his. I'm not trying to compete with Bruces, but rather the Panasonic & Marshall.

Good luck.

Man... that's great. When do you anticipate taking orders and the estimated price? I have something going on in November that requires a monitor and I wasn't impressed with the Marshall and the other monitors are out of my price.

kudos and congrats to you for taking this initiative.. as y ou said, the LCD companies don't give a toss for the most part so thanks for filling this void...

I also think that the scratch screen is a great idea. A hoodman would also be good too.. and have you thought about some kind of arm or holder for the monitor? I know you have for the battery. I"m thinking of getting one of those anyway. Does anyone know if it would power a macbook?

cheers and Congrats. Looks sweet....

Hey Justyn,
I anticipated taking orders this week, and shipping on those in 2 weeks, but I'm just working out the details for the batteries.

I think I will have a plate that will house the battery on the back of the unit.
This plate could be removable and swapable.

So lets say you are filming in a production enviroment where they will have tons of anton bauer batteries. the you just switch out the back to the anton Bauer battery holder, and presto. But if you are in alow budget situation, then switch out the plate to the Tekkeon battery holder. and bring your own batteries, etc....

I'm trying to make it flexible.

But this also means that I will re-design the case ever so slightly. That is why I haven't posted it on my site to take orders. (also I'm working on writting a manual for it)

I'll try to get this out as fast as I can.

Thanks for your interest.

Sincerely,

Luis
