A Properly working DOF Adapter... Less than 1 stop light loss

My brother and I build Military Spec products for special projects. Mostly Aerial mounted units based on Infrared and Thermal heads. This was our first project in the 400-700 NM range. Of course visible light becomes a tricky monster when you start bouncing and scattering photons of of a spinning piece of glass. We think we nailed it. We're thinking of producing this unit as a production model. The images are are very clean, edge to edge and the image falloff is non apparent. Anyway, here's a quick shot through the barrel of the unit with a Nikon still cam. We milled it out of 6061. This is just a beta version and the footage is outstanding. We will post some video very soon.... Would like to hear any comments and find out if there's any interest in a production run?

Sorry the image is just focused on near infinity, but the Shallow DOF is beautiful on this. Wow.... and the image is quite large... Like beyond the 72mm ring...

Thanks,

Cory Easom

I think the success of your models would depend on a few factors:

1)Does the image holds up when used with an HD camera?
2) Vibrating, still or rotating GG?
3) Size and weight? Does it flip the image (from your still doesn't look like it would)? Are there support for rails, alternate lense mount?
4) And of course most importantly, what's the price?

Thanks Jade! DVX and HVX specific Adapter production..

Thanks Jade! DVX and HVX specific Adapter production..

The Image holds up extremely well with the DVX100. It does use a spinning (real) glass. The overall front on face footprint has less surface area than that of a 4x6 photo and the length if the unit is less than the lens barrel assembly (front round section) of the DVX. Having some understanding of the refractive index, minimizing lens and chromatic aberration, and general light channeling, we've managed to keep the image flat, right to the ccd's and avoid noticable wavelength separation. I'll be shooting a focus grid with the DVX and posting stills. Sorry I don't have a micrometer or scale with me at the moment, but the unit weighs less than a Panavision film camera. Actually less than 30 ounces with the lens and achromat installed. Without glass, it's near weightless. Ready to film, it's approx half the weight of the DVX100. Bundled with the Camera, it's just over 5 lbs and handheld shooting is very comfortable. For reference, a large cat weighs 20 lbs. Since it's camera specific for the DVX, we've developed a solid mounting system that eliminates the need for rails and the unit slips on like clockwork and the user can focus and film within moments after docking the unit. We've also decided to produce an additional assembly that will flip the image during production without additional light loss. I cannot suggest a price range at this moment.

We have decided to produce the assembly for the DVX100 and also the HVX200. We will post new stills and footage with both cameras. DVX first followed by HVX as soon as one can be aquired.

We gladly welcome any user input here. The goal is to make the best unit possible and keep the price in the prosumer range.

As film makers, what would you like to see in a completed unit?

Thanks so much.

If you can make is lightweight so you can use is without rails for quick steadcam like operation. Have a .5 lightloss or less and a spinning gg and is flipped then it fill a nitch and compete with Brevis. Even better be to come up with some type of stablization without the needs of a stablilizer will eliminate the steadcam all together..that would be a treat in itself.

Mark.. Cat Harness

Concerning proper mounting for your cat. Since we won't be offering any rail system, we came up with this. Everyone knows Redrockmicro offers this high quality rail system:

Here are a couple of options.. The Rail mount harness using the amazing Redrock rails... or a direct to tripod Bogen/Vin-Vision mount.
I think the cat would prefer the direct mount harness with the carpeted platform. What do you think?

I'm anxious to see the pricing options of your unit. Will you offer a flip or non flip version?

Here are a few more images.... :) Would love to hear any feedback.

Of course any production units would be black anodized aluminum.

Can't you just flip your cat?

Sort of cool looking the way it is. With the aluminum parts of it, reminds me of some sort of retro 40's-50's looking gear. I know nobody will like shiny reflective but maybe you can enhance that look somehow instead of just blacking the whole thing? I'd like to see, like everyone else, how well it works though.

Hi!

Looks nice, but I am not sure.. looks like the spining GG is somehow too far away from the lens.. or it is just optical illusion.. or is it some optical add-on inside?

And what is that red coating on achromat? .. in some other thread it is said that red is used on lower grade binocular achromat, to hide specs.. but maybe you have something more professional..

Looks great, anyway.. and greetings for R&D effort!!!

the image projected on the gg seems real bright

the image projected on the gg seems real bright

It seems like the image on the gg is super bright. Other diy units for dof look less colorfull. It doesnt look like any vignette or a hot spot either. Could this unit be used for other cheaper units like an average off the shelf camcorder. My vacation vids could benifit from something like this but I dont have thousands for a big camera like all the guys on this forum. Thanks for showing what the unit looks like I do want to see some footage though.

Yea, tell us more about you better mouse trap, what lens is that you have on that, and the red achromat...and them funny buttons

This could be something differently cool. I didn't notice from first glance at the pics but have you guys noticed the size (diameter) of the lense on the front in relation to the DVX lense?

captures from the unit...

captures from the unit...

Well, Here I am. Trying to look cool with my brother Cody. Just trying to make adapter testing fun again. This was filmed during a storm, in a cemetery, near dusk. I'm the one in the glasses and Cody is the guy in the Battle of the Bands shirt. I'm new at the Cinegamma stuff and the whole capture process. These are interlaced frames. Oh, Another important thing. The Firewire port on my DVX is broken so the footage was transfered to a TRV320 Sony DV via S-video cord, then captured in Adobe Premiere 6.0. I'm guessing all of the footage and captures would be more accurate if captured directly from the DVX. Either way, it looks like I will be able to Capture some footage very soon with an HVX. More captures and better light in the next posts. Thanks for looking.
