rumors of a shooting - what to do

I'm in a bit of a pickle here. Some time not too long ago there was a huge shooting at a restaurant on Broadway (Vancouver) where several people were killed. Today someone sent me a message on Facebook saying a friend of hers posted a message
"warning everyone not to go to bars / clubs in the next little bit because there's going to be a "revenge shooting." If it happens it'll probably be in an asian club like Plush or Atlantis."
The source is trustworthy and I since received the same message from several other people. so something is definitely going down.

what the hell would you do in this situation (apart from not going to any "asian clubs" in the next while)? I'm really confused

here's the news story: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2007/08/09/vancouver-shooting.html?ref=rss

My 2 Cents:

1. 9 out of 10 times these repeating messages are just spamming hype mail and amount to complete B/S..

2. Stay clear of asian clubs regardless!

Mass hysteria. Something happens, someone spreads a rumor, or a "what if", it can spread and cause panic everywhere. Even if your contact is trustworthy, they may have gotten it from another "trustworthy" contact.

Just stay out of shady clubs and don't think too much of it IMO.

oh no. this is the real deal. these people are totally psycho. I am 99% sure something is going down, I just wonder what I'm supposed to do with the info

Tell the police what you know. They have plenty of experience with this, and they should be able to prioritize it appropriately.

the hell you mean "what to do"?!
Call the poo pooing cops...that's what to do.
Say some innocent bystander kid gets plugged...
you want that on your conscious?
Jesus

Put the shutter at 1/24th, only stop down as much as needed, and go hand-held. I'd go as wide as possible, too. You can always close it up in post.

I would buy beer, food, alcohol, snacks, and rent a stack of videos until the shooting stops.
-Or-
Get a gun and join in. Depends on the kind of day I've been having.

...

Exactly. Why is this even a question?

Besides which, if your source is so trustworthy, and something does happen, and the cops find out you knew about it ahead of time, expect a call from them in any case...

If you had any actual evidence that something was going to happen, I'd say by all means go to the cops.

But if you go to the police station and tell them that a friend on Facebook told you it would happen, they'll give you the same response as if you told them you were in a coma for six years, and when you woke up you can see people's future by touching them...

Seriously, though. Any credible piece of info would have some specifics (dates, times, an actual location, etc). I get rumors through Facebook all the time, most of which tell me that if I don't re-post their message within an hour, I'll be tied to a mountain, and each morning a buzzard will come and eat my liver...

Except for the fact that this rumor message was related to a previous murder (and presumably open murder investigation).

Regardless, it's kind of beside the point what the police do with the information. The point is, it's the right thing for this guy to do, esp if he really thinks it's credible.

And...er...um, you really think the kind of people who are planning a multiple murder are going to tell people when they're coming? Seriously? I'm no criminal mastermind, but in my book, that kind of defeats the purpose...

The recent shootings here are between the asian gangs and the Indo-canadian (East Indian) gangs. We don't have Crips and Bloods and all those street gangs because there are like 200 black guys in Vancouver, but millions of people in the Indian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Philipino, and Vietnamese communities. Basically the city drug trade and all the strippers, are run by the Hells Angels and the Asian and Indo-Canadian Street gangs battle it out for whats left over.

Lately there has been a flood of black market american guns and 50cent DVDs hitting the streets of Canada. They are used as currency in the drug trade due to our highly restrictive gun control program. The recent shootings are the bad boys trying out their new toys.

A few years ago these shootings happened on nightclub dancefloors and now almost every hip hop club has metal detectors and video surveillance. They have also talked about banning all forms of expensive gangsta-wear in clubs and bars. No more Sean john, Versace or D&G t-shirts for you!

yeah... the question was posed because like someone said, if you go to the cops and say someone on Facebook told you something was going down they'd hardly listen. but at the same time I don't want this on my consciousness. And I also don't want to get my friend or myself involved in this mess.

something has been done but I'm still encouraging all my friends to become familiar with the local video rental shop for the next few weeks.

ooooh. Shootings. If I had to not go out every time there was a shooting, I'd never leave the house.

Welcome to Los Angeles.
