Bay is so low rent

You just summed up the star wars prequils in one sentance. I agree with you, and I think ever since "Twister" the hollywood blockbuster has shifted to the effects driven plot vs the character driven plot.

This is a great great observation Mattin and something that nobody seems to understand because they don't have anything good to compare the current state of film with.

As far as those saying that people "pass judgement with their pocketbooks", I mean come on. Anybody with a passing knowledge of the movie industry knows that money has absolutely nothing to do with a film's quality. Wild Hogs made nearly 200 million dollars. Does that mean it was a great movie? Or that it's director is some sort of comedy genius?

And to say that my hatred of Michael Bay amounts to me being jealous and insecure (I'm assuming because his movies make so much money??), I mean come on, that's reaching. I admire a lot of filmmakers that make a ton of money at the box office. Speilberg, Zemeckis, Cameron, and to some extent, Peter Jackson. Those are filmmakers with some genuine talent and understanding of story and pacing and filmmaking. Bay is a first-grade hack who only understands how to throw everything at the screen. He's a terrible unorginal filmmaker.

I just think Bay is a hack. I've stated clearly in other threads why I believe this. And I think I put forth a pretty convincing argument. For him to pick a fight with someone of Bruce Willis' stature is not only ridiculous, but a really dumb move on his part (and something that will definitely come back to bite him in the ass).

Sorry, I don't think the guy should be making movies. And if I were a betting man, I'd probably bet that this won't be the last time I bring up my opinion on the matter.

When it comes to the kind of films Bay makes (ie, the blow-em up in your face action genre) there is really nobody to compare him to. He does those types of films very well, you have to admit. He's not going to make the next Schindler's List, but he's got an edge over many other directors in his same genre. His movies are pure escapism and that's what makes them great. I'm not going to put one of his films in my all-time favorite list, but when it comes down to favorite popcorn flicks, you bet his name will be up there. He's a great entertainer and when it comes to summer movies, 'nuff said.

I liked Pearl Harbor and Armegeddon for what they were; but I am wondering if Bay will ever do anything beyond the sugary stuff he is doing; does he have anything personal on his list ?
Funny...I liked The Rock :embarasse in spite of Bay and Cage. I also like some of the first half of The Island. Now, that's a ringing endorsement...I liked parts of the first half...:grin:

i thought this was about renting apartments in San Fran too. but just to throw it in there, i thought TRANSFORMERS was horrible, and only because i can't think of a worse word. growing up having watched them my whole life i really had a hard time not being mad at the theater as i watched this crap unravel. it was like camera trick after camera trick, i can swear i even saw him use the same explosion twice back to back, i'll check on the dvd when it comes out. but in short, i can't stand michael bay. there's some movies of his that were o.k. and that's just to say that they weren't completely horrible to me, but still sucked.

I just love that when he leaves work one of his Ferraris, the first thing lit up by his
headlights are the homeless folks out front of the Santa Monica shelter :) THATs
Bay :)

how many times does that jerkoff have to cut to men running to f-16s or helicopters at sunset?!? every movie he makes, it cuts to guys on the airfield loading up...always at sunset! 10 to 20 times per movie! and this is inbetween scenes that happen in broad daylight. it's like he always wanted to direct Clockstoppers but got turned down, so he takes it out on us viewers...

Also, no angle ever lasts longer than 2 seconds. It's like watching a regular movie on fast-forward.

I'm a huge action fan but Bay really upset me by reuniting the cast of Holes for Transformers...

Matt hit the nail on the head when he said the bar has been lowered. Bay used to make commercials..which are basically slickly produced shiny pieces of fluff that try and make you buy junk you don't need. He brought this into his movies.

His art is nil. Technical skills, yes. Good looking shots, yes. Redundant shots, yes. Good stuff for a 14 year old, yes, sure. They can walk around and talk about what a great filmmaker he is, and then buy a Britney Spears CD and rave at what a talented artist she is.

I actually paid to see Bad Boys. Bad Boys 2 was a buddy's treat, since he knew I probably wouldn't enjoy it. Both times I went, it was done in protest and to make a friend happy.

They sucked. Hard. The acting was hammy, the dialogue was pedestrian, and the plot was basic. Sure, some effects were good. If I was lower order primate, I'd probably have found both films fascinating. And loud. Then I would have thrown my feces at the screen.

If I ever get to meet Bay, I'm probably going to take a swing at him because I don't like the way he treats film...like you would want to deck a pimp for how he treats women.

I don't hate him. I'm not jealous. He can make all the money he likes...good for him. I'd rather have Truffaut's career...and his fans.

The dude is just giving certain people what they want. Is a crack dealer a dummy for selling crack, or is it the customers who make him rich by buying it?

Well...i really really enjoyed transformers....I mean transformers was great for what it was - an action summer movie. And in that respect i think it succeeded remarkably. Sometimes you just need pure, mindless, in your face action to spice things up a bit. I can see where alot of you are coming from when you say that he's not got any heart, but thats like judging children's movies for being 'immature'.
