I've built a vibrating adapter and follow focus! Introducing The Lux35

Yup, after a gazillion hours that didn't make any financial sense, I've finished my vibrating GG adapter. I've been on quite a long journey, taking inspiration from Edweirdo35, Daniel Schweinert, Wayne Kinney and others.

Here's a few clips from my first test shoot. The follow focus wan't ready as I still need lens gears, so my focussing is a bit off, but I think it looks pretty darned good:

Test

The GG is wax, a tenth of a mm thick sandwiched in 35mm slide glass. The achromat is the SGPro R3 achro. The vibrating motor is from Daniel, as is most of the fundamental design. The FF design is derived from a variety of FFs. Photos to follow...

Lucas, that looks great!

Follow focus, talk me. You build a follow focus, I say it looks good. Now my mate Giuseppe, he says, Ritchie, you gotta see this follow focus, follow focus I say, follow focus he says. He says he's seen this website. He says post to there and ask this fella about the follow focus. so here I am,

Follow focus, talk to me...

Dude, I've canibalised my indifocus to try to improve on it and I'm looking for parts to make it cool and work like a dream. It was good before but I wanted to take it apart and see how I can improve on it.

Where did you get your focus handle from? I'd love to get one as it looks great. What are you using for the focus gearbox?

Also dude, you say your in england, where are you mate? I'm out in sunny essex [well not that sunny]. If you are in the sticks but still on the underground does that make you an Eastender, a South London lad, a Northern bloke or a way out west dude? District Line I'll be placing my bet on and in the East...

Lets see some more piccys of the adapter and the follow focus!

Tight work !

Hi MajorMorgan,
Or should I say, Terry Tibbs! I made the focus handle from a sheet of white perspex, which I cut into a circle on a bandsaw, and then trimmed with a router, using a drill bit in the centre hole as a hub to get it perfectly round. The handle itself is a focus barrel from an old lens I took apart. They are bolted ogether with 4 tiny bolts. The focus gearbox is from RS components, and is where everybody, especially in the UK should be getting their gears from, as it's £15 and is the same model that a couple of the pro ff manufacturers are using. The rest of the FF is made with a block of Delrin I bought and cut up on my bandsaw. I still have no lens gears, but I'm thinking of stumping up the $150 to buy 3 from Redrock Micro, as they are not too expensive and are reportedly very good. That's all I need now.

I live in Rickmansworth, up near Watford, so no-where near Essex, I'm afraid.

Lucas, thanks for getting back to us!

Near Watford eh? :)

Great job on the follow focus and adapter!!!!

Let's see some more pictures up close etc... !

The info is great, although I have to admit I don't know many of the terms you mention.

I looked at RS components site and the gearbox is the Huco which is what is shipped with the indifocus. So I might have to buy the Redrockmicro gear box which is available to buy seperate as an upgrade as they used the Huco for the first batches. There's supposed to be less play in the gear box.

Where did you get your gear from that will drive the lens gears when you buy them?

I'm looking at RS components gears, but the gears look short in width so they might not be up to the job. I need a gear thats 0.8 pitch, 32 teeth and probably 20mm in diameter. Is that what you went for.

What old lens whas it as I'll keep an eye out for one to break up.

I have the plastic ring from the indifocus handle, but the gear is too big and cumbersome.

Like you I am also thinking of buying the redrock lens gears. They look like they will mark the lenses less and that they will be more stable than the gears I have from the indifocus which uses 4 grub screws to look it to the lens.

If I find anything else I'll let you know.

Thanks for all the info so far !

Can't wait to see more if you'll show us!
