Hi gang- I've poked around the site and saw people chatting about cool lights as one resource- They dont have anything in stock and are busy in China with there new product it seems- that being said I do like what they have on their on the site-

I'm looking for my first light kit to do interviews with - KINOS seem expensive -

What would you recommend as my first light kit to do interview with?
Links are welcome fo course. I feel FLourescents are the way to go for flattery
and their low temperatures...

ADVICE appreciated.

I will be using the stock hvx in 24pn or 30 pn
thanks
Matt

You'll probably get a lot of answers on this (and most will be correct). I use a kino-flo diva, mostly for fill. Works nicely with nearly any combination of lights...

If you just need to light your subject (medium or closeups) you can get away with murder using a softbox, a 300w fresnel, and the diva lite.

wellit sounds like you recommend using a mixture of lights NOT all flourescents..? The divas look nice - do you use just one? pricey though

yep, I mix 'em. You can gel lights if necessary. A couple of flourescents will work for an interview key & fill but it you use some other smaller lights it will not hit you as hard in the pocketbook (and don't forget to try bounce cards). I will normally run an Arri 650 softbox, and at least a 150 rim light in addition to the Diva.

but I'm no expert . . . those guys hang out in the lighting section--check it out.

BTW. i own a couple of the coollights and while i think they perform as well as the kino divas, they are clunky and heavy and not built to last. barndoors absolutely suck on them too. i have a 4 light and 6 light. they would be great for a permanent install but hauling them around takes it's toll on the weak construction.

I can't find any sites with a price for the filmgear 4 bank flo-box. But if it performs like a kino for less $, I'm very interested!

yeah me neither. i submitted a quote request to the company. will report back when i get pricing. i rented a pair of 4x4s from indie and they gave me one kino and one filmgear. both had kino globes. i didn't see a bit of difference in quality of light. i think the filmgear ones are built a little more solid but still just as lightweight. for the barndoors, they have stay-put hinges instead of flexible gooseneck tubes. and the mounting plate is way beefier. the header cable is identical to the kino. i would bet that the ballasts are interchangeable between kinos and filmgears but i didn't try it. smart move on filmgear's part. they could do well just selling replacement parts for kinos. my only gripe is the ballast is silver. looks cheap to me. they should paint black like kino...
