I want to apply an effect on some animation I've done but I don't know what it's called. Best description I can give is that it's a "time smudge" - like when you leave the shutter open for too long on a still camera and you get smudged movement in the picture.

I know this is possible (it might require a plugin) but since I can't for the life of me figure out what it's called I can't search for a tutorial or anything else.

so, if anyone out there has a better idea of what I'm talking about than me, please make your voice heard. time is of the essence.

Some plugs:
Revision Effects > Real smart motion blur
Genarts > Saphire (time average and others)

There is a plugin that comes with AE called CC Wide Time. That can do what you are looking for fairly well.

Lots of other plugin sets have a Wide Time kind of filter as well.

if thats not the right thing, I believe he is talking about like the shots of cars you see on the road and the tail lights extend out into a line...its like a timelapse and delayed exposure

it's like "liquid" time. exactly what mts4243369 (dude, you need a better handle!) describes

you can also use the "echo time" filter to create a sort of trailer like effect, but it may not be as smooth as youd like unless you itterate the timline many times extended.
