Invisible Skateboard

Motion control camera. Replays the same move after you shoot a shot with no people there as a clean slate. Key clean slate into the green board keys and then remove the shadows of the board and clean up the shadows inside the board keyhole area.
Many of the shots seem too jerky and haphazard (handheld?) to be motion control

my guess is it was keyed/cloned without the help of a MoCo cam. Even considering the added time and money it would take in post, it would still probably be cheaper. MoCo units are physically huge and take hours to setup and calibrate. Considering skate videos normally steal their locations, the added cost of the extra time, a Motion Control Camera and crew, and the location associated costs (i.e. having to pay for the location) wouldn't make it worth it.

This is so easy it's actually painful WHY DO YOU THINK THE BOARDS ARE GREEN!

To key out the boards. But key them out to what? What would be underneath them? Without a clean back plate, you would key them out to the composition's background default color, or even give yourself a nice alpha channel.

Again, has anyone here actually tried to clone out something in moving, panning video with video clone tools? Or worse using a frame exported from part of a scene, remove some elements with the clone stamp and healing brush and then try and put it back into panning video? I've done both, and it's a friggin nightmare. What's worse, with the single frame approach, you have to motion track with rotation, and then you have to try and match grain, and on and on and on.

Best and simplest way is motion control. No one has ever said motion control is limited to smooth pans and dolly shots. You can do anything with them.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeah_Right! I seem to remember that they recorded the motion control on the first pass and panned the camera to follow the skaters. Then by playing that camera motion back while they recorded the same thing but with no people they now have a clean plate of underneath and just have to remove the skateboard shadows (also replacing that with the clean plate)

Getting a second pass that recodsa a moving clean plate makes cutting something out a matter of masking a hole where the shadows are.
its alot of roto bezier work animating those mattes, but less than hand painting 9000 frames.
