Monitor to HDTV or HD computer monitor??

Here is a real "stupid" question but I wanted to get everyone's opinion.

I just added the Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro High Definition HDMI and Analog PCIe Capture Card to my system.

I wanted to know which would be better to monitor out to..

a High Definition television or an HD computer monitor...

The BM Intensity card will allow me to output to an HDTV via the HDMI while I can still output to an HD computer monitor via component or DVI.

Most HDTV's between the 20" and 30" seem to be 720p only. Would this make any difference if I were to capture 1080 video with the HVX and try and monitor to that 720p HDTV?

I have learned a lot from all of you guys and I would like you thoughts on this.

Maybe it's too late to change your mind, but unless you need HD analog capture, the Matrox MXO is probably a more effective solution, certainly at least cost-wise. It will turn a second DVI monitor into a broadcast monitor and feed an NTSC screen (HD or SD) at the same time. I just got one and it is exactly as billed. Great.

If you do need the Blackmagic's analog capture though, then it's another story.

price difference?

price difference?

Ted,

Thank you for your reply! I know the MXO and the BM Pro are two different animals and that is obvious in their price difference. I had a few questions.

Have you tried outputting to Digital Betcam or HDCAM through the MXO? How did that go? Was it simple to do? What other equipment did you need?

I do not think I will need the analog capture but not sure. What type of situtations would warrant to captuer via analog?

Thanks

Matrox MXO outputs DV, DigiBeta, HD... anything you want. All you need is Matrox MXO and a DVI monitor. The MXO also has outputs for SDI and composite/component. These are always hot. Furthermore, you can output HD to your DVI and downrez to SD to go out component or SDI. I cannot praise it highly enough...

From an analog source, like a tape machine mainly, or HD cable box, or any HD source that can't be directly imported digitally. You'd use the component video inputs on the BM for this. The BM (like the Kona) is one of the few relatively affrdable ways to get analog component recording. You can't do it with most HD camcorders, DVD recorders, etc.

I think there are very few situations where I myself would need this, which is why I opted for the MXO. I also didn't have an empty PCI slot available on my G5, so that was a factor too. There may be some audio advantages to the BM as well (definitely on the Kona), but I handle high end audio projects separately through Pro Tools anyway.

Yes. Same thing as MXO. It takes the SDI output of your Decklink card and converts to DVI monitor. But a more expensive solution than MXO if you do not need an input card since the least expensive card is $1000 or 565 Sterling (typing on a PC and don't know key combo).
