I am looking to buy this camera, however I shoot often at diffent locations around the world.. Third world countries etc. Do we need to bring a computer to download the material? Or is there a small portable unit for that. Also does the security Xray affect anything... How easy is it to loose footage? How strong are the memory cards? Cna they be taken around in a backback?

Thanks,
Geoff

You can if you wish but if all you want to do is offload then a USB ON THE GO Hdd will do the job. Do a search!

Indy.. In Guatemala going to Peru overland with his HVX!

I think there are lots of people that travel with the HVX. There are several methods that people use to store footage. The P-2 cards sound like they are very durable. The Fire Store holds a lot of data too. Here is a link to a cheap but seemingly successful way to store data with out the use of a computer.

Get some cheap hard drives and portable power unit and voila!

P2 cards are tough as hell - especially when in their cases. You could have them in a backpack that falls off the roof of a building and they'd probably be fine (I don't recommend it though!).

Personally, I'd be taking a Mac laptop (either with a big HDD or an external HDD) - just because it allows you to review your footage after each shoot nicely, and having a laptop on shoots and during longer shooting periods is always handy. That's assuming you'll have a gennie or other power source with you often (which, if you're shooting in 3rd world countries, may not be possible?) to re-charge things.

But, as above, there are other options.

If you're really keen on tapes you can shoot DV too.

I haven't travelled w/the HVX via airlines yet, but I do know of plenty of people who have, and I've never heard of a problem.

I fly out with my HVX all the time.
I carry on a bag with the HVX, batteries, filters, P2 cards etc. My other bag has my laptop, Dolgin battery charger, mattebox, P2 Store and anything else I can cram in there.
All this easily fits even on regional jets.

My tripod goes in the cargo hold in a Nalpak hard case.

In the field I usually carry my camera bag, a couple extra batteries, P2 Store filters, mattebox etc. My camera bag has outer pockets but I can't put anything in them until I reach my destination because it won't fit in the overhead bin on a regional jet.

I usually am out shooting all day. Once I get back to the hotel, I transfer all the footage from the P2 cards and the P2 Store to portable USB2 drives that I pack in my laptop bag. I usually bring a half dozen or so depending on the length of the trip.

Once those are full, I start filling my laptops drive. Once that is full I start dumping footage to DVD-R's.

If I'm near a good sized city I'll stop at a Staples or something and pick up more portable hard drives if I have to. I can get the 120 gig ones for like $90 on sale.

No issues with X-Rays at all. I've only ever had one real issue with losing footage and that was because someone popped out the card as it was being recorded to.

I like to bring my laptop with me as I can already start working on editing while I'm out in the field.

I second what Kevin said. Just beware that if you fly to Europe, you get one carry on, not two as we do over here. I recently returned from a U.K. shoot and brought the laptop, six drives, the HVX, eight 16Gb cards, adaptors, filters, cables, matte box, etc. all in one back breaking backpack, the OGIO Ty Ford model. It must have weighed 60lbs and my shoulders and arms were covered in bruises by the time I made it from LA to Glasgow. But it worked.

I did have to take a small jet from Heathrow to Glasgow where the backpack didn't come close to fitting in the overhead so I had to runway check it into the hold and I hand carried the HVX and my laptop. No biggie.

Best of luck,

Dan

UK is one carry on. All other European countries are two carry-ons. But stay current with the rules on both the airlines' as well as the respective country's web sites.

Just avoid Heathrow and British Airways and you should be OK.

I went from Birmingham, AL to Charlotte, NC, to Seattle, WA, to Tapei, to Jakarta Indonesia and back again. Had my camera 10 batteries, Panny charger, 4 p2 cards, DV multirigpro all in a Cinebag CB20. Carryon the whole way. From a little CanadaAir Regional Jet to big 747. Perfect Carry on size.

I woulda used my Pelican 1510, but I couldn't carry as much in it, and I had a baby with me so couldn't be carrying around extra luggage.

Hi Jason:

I have that same bag also, before I bought the Ogio, I used it a lot. It is a great bag.

Did you bring a laptop? Did you carry it also? Wow, with a baby? I can only imagine. I traveled with my kids when they were toddlers but not with an HVX or anything that sized. You are a talented juggler ;-)

Hey. I didn't bring a laptop b/c the laptop that I have at the moment is 20.1" screen. It weighs almost 20 lbs. I was a bit worried about carry on weight for my international leg b/c of their restrictions, but found that to be irrelevant when I saw people bringing on two big suitcases and stowing them in the closet in my section.

That's the only thing that bag doesn't have is a slot for a laptop. I didn't need one there though as they provided me with a laptop to do offloading of p2 cards.

As far as bringing the baby and all that, it wasn't too bad. Just exhausting :) Baby was a great traveller though. Never caused any trouble. People were very helpful too. Except on boarding in Taipei. Both times. Took my stroller and made me hold my baby and all my crap for half an hour. And then had to stand in line like everyone else. I was boiling :)

Anyways. Yeah. CB20 is perfect carryon size and you can fit a lot in it. I almost prefer it as a carryon over a pelican hard case b/c it just straps on your back and keeps your hands free. It's easier getting it in and out of overhead, etc. And, it draws less attention. I did have my camera swabbed once for explosives. And that was on my very last transfer after Ihad been and come back... go figure :)

I went to the Netherlands this past May on US Air. I handcarried the HVX200 and the guy asked me to pull it out of the bag. He looks at it as says, Man thats a HVX200 can I hold it. I said sure. He said he had been lusting since they came out.
