Is Vegas a better NLE when it comes to Composing Sound?

I was wondering if anyone can tell me if Sony Vegas is better for sound editing. I was watching one of Andrew's Kramer tuturial on After Effects (Sound Designer FX) and he mentioned Vegas as being a better NLE system for sound. I currently use Adobe's Production Suite CS2. I have Adobe Audition and I am not sure how to use it. I wanted to know what would be best for sound before I invest my time in learning Adobe Audition. Thanks.

Vegas used to be a sound application only. I haven't used Audition, but I have never encountered any audio limitation with Vegas.

I've also heard it's the best NLE audio-wise from many others on this forum.

I would prefer to use a dedicated audio app over Vegas only for better media management options. For actually editing and mixing audio, I love Vegas, and it will be even sweeter in ver. 8 with a dedicated mix console.

Thanks Guys for the reply. Any suggestions on a dedicated audio application that is pc based or are you recommending Vegas 8 for the mix console. I'm also curious to know what kind of speaker set-up you guys have for sound or do you use a studio headphone to listen to your audio mixes. Much Appreciated!

Sony Vegas and Sony Sound Forge are a great 1-2 punch when you are editing sound. You can have both applications open at the same time, which allows you to really do some detailed editing to the actual audio file in Sound Forge. You use Vegas for easy dragging, dropping, automation and EQing. Every time that you save something in Sound Forge, then Vegas will update itself with the new file. It's pretty amazing.

As opposed to AVID/Pro Tools. You have to export a file in Avid, close it, then open protools, then edit it, then export a new file, then close protoos, then open Avid, then import the new file. It's a royal pain in the ...

I LOOOOOVE the Vegas SoundForge combo... SF can work as your clipper on steroids and vegas can work as a Pro Toold type of timeline... often you can do tweaks to ur clips without going to SF....

I am not sure how easy it would be to move ur clips in the timeline if you need them to snap to beat marks but I think you can at least see the lines... ACID seems to be made just for that, but I think I could "engineer" a musician's song in Vegas if I had to...

Vegas FTW

It's not a hardware mixer, but a very intuitive way of mixing in the box. Every audio app has one and now Vegas does too.

It allows u to see the wave better, convenient buttons and I think it has more tools... if you want to tweak something sometimes it it more convenient to right click it and open it in sound forge... if you don't care to keep the original you simply save it and when you switch back over to Vegas you see the clip updating...if you want to keep the original you save it as something else and then drop it in fro, Vegas' explorer...

I also use iy with a Tascam US-122 that I picked up for $75 to record my ADR downstairs in my closet-booth at 24/96... though I think there is a way to save with Vegas I could't figure it out quickly and I really enjoy SF...

It seems V8 will include SF and DVDA!

I don't have SoundForge. What can it do that Vegas cannot?

Despite what many think, not much, plus you're completely non-destructive and get multichannel. I use Vegas for audio all the time, and there isn't much I can't do in Vegas that I can in SF. And I can surely "see" my waveform just as good in vegas than SF, just zoom in (up/down arrows to zoom in time, then CTRL-SHIFT up/down to zoom in loudness). You don't have as many resampling options, or dithering options, but for dithering you can just use your own vst.

one big problem I run into with Vegas is the inability to move the clips in smaller increments than one frame... sound clips default to starting at the begining of a frame and sometimes I'd like to move it just a bit and the only way I figured out how to do that so far is by cutting it in SF.....

there has to be a better way... how can you move sound like this in Vegas?

Options > Quantize To Frames also Alt + F8

It is on by default. You can turn it off and edit frame independent.

I am now convinced that Vegas has everything but the hardware on ProTools... heheh of course I am not the authority or a big enough user to KNOW that yet but I am determined to get there.

I will be doing some music engineering soon and I will put Vegas to the test instead of learning ACID... though I bet that there might be a lot more little buttons and stuffs having to do with time measures and other things about music composition that are still all too obscure for me to appreciate.

Also, for $500 + $100 for the console ther is no comparison to the cost of ProTools... even if the console isn't designed for Vegas like PT's is. And even if you got ACID on top of it you are still at $1000 + in savings.

I am talking about the separate hardware console... I forget the name but it is proven to work with Vegas and it has 8 motorized channels and lots of buttons... but for some of the actions you need to hold a "shift" or "alt" button as some of them have to work for more than one function.

Was it you William that shared the link with us?
