Imac Performance

Im getting ready to buy an Imac 20" 2.4ghz, will the 2gb of ram upgrade be sufficient for editing A1 HDV footage on FCP, or would u recommend sticking with the stock 1gb and then buying 2x2GB aftermarket ram? im looking to stay under 2,000 or lower for the Mac.

I've built several Windows based pcs, but i dont know if ripping into the new Imacs is easy, if i wanted to upgrade the ram myself, I just wouldnt want to mess anything up (they look so compact):undecided

also can anyone tell me if the "Applecare Protection Plan" is worth getting?

any help appreciated

I'd definitely go for (reputable) aftermarket RAM; it is easy to install. Make sure you're aware of how many open slots you have; you may end up having to remove a smaller card and replace it with a larger one - so that if your iMac has 2x512, and you add 1GB, you may end up with 1.5 GB...

Looks like the new iMacs have 2 slots, and ship with 1GB in 1 of 'em... so you can go to 3GB without tossing the one it comes with, or to 4GB by replacing it.

AppleCare? Depends how much you gamble... I've gone through 9 macs, and have never had or missed AppleCare - never had a problem that needed Apple's fixing, except for one back in the late '90s that Apple fixed for free anyway. My personal take is that, with the speed of technology advancement, etc., putting AppleCare money towards the next machine purchase is a better value... but certainly others seem to have had problems that AppleCare has solved... however, the question is, how would they have fared without AppleCare? I don't know... Apple has always supported me well without it!

Not to sound like a me to post, got some extra ram from macsales.com as well and haven't had any problems with it.

As for the Applecare, I did have my laptop HD die on me (after the warranty was up) and the Applecare covered the replacement HD. Some people wait until the first year is over to get the Applecare plan.

Congrats on getting the iMac, it's a good machine.
